Lol. She doesn't need anything super fancy. She just needs a laptop to surf the web and type up papers. Shit like that. My old laptop specs are:
Intel Pentium dual-core @ 1.73ghz
2GB of RAM
150GB HD
15" widescreen
DVD player/CD RW
HP laptop with vista loaded.
I think a laptop that meets or exceeds those specs and is within her price range would be pretty good for her.

OK, the two here are sold out, but you might be able to back order at that price?
Toshiba Laptop @ Best Buy
Sony Vaio Laptop @ Best Buy
What are your feelings on netbooks? Lots of the big stores are running specials on netbooks for the big sale.

There are a lot of pretty decent laptops at Best Buy for less than $400, that's just the first one that caught my eye.

Haha, when I saw it I got excited and almost wanted to buy it myself then I remembered I have a laptop that I've used once or twice in the 3 years that I've had it. I'm glad I could be of help to you though .

That laptop was temping until I noticed it said nothing about wifi on the specs. I'd need to clarify that it would work on my campus before I buy it.

the only problem with those procs / mobile video cards inside PCs is, if you're writing a paper, you can't have it on your lap. they get insanely hot. which is why i recommended the lenovo. if i have it on for 5 hours, writing a paper or even playing a game, it can stay on my lap. it runs extremely cool and this is a huge issue with me buying a laptop. if i have to leave it on a desk because it's lava hot, i'd just use a desktop. that's one complaint i've always had with notebook pcs. plus the battery life on those is like 2 hours, where as the one i pointed out is about 4.5 hours with a 6 cell battery, which is again, huge if you're in class or out and about having your laptop. 2 hours of battery life is less than adequate.

I didn't scrutinize the specs too much but seems alright.
