So Nashville ran out of gas on Friday. Stations get deliveries now and then but I'd say 8/10 stations are empty. Those that do have gas have long lines, on Saturday some were miles long. I never thought I'd see anything like this - it looks like pictures of the 70's during the gas rationing. I have half a tank, but I drive an 8-cylinder with a heavy foot. I hope to find something tomorrow. There's been stories on the news about violence at the stations, but you know there's been like two incidents and the media blows it all out of proportion.

Gave me an awesome excuse to watch football all weekend and not mow the lawn. I hope ya'll don't have to go through something like this. I think Atlanta is having the same problems, but Kentucky seems to be ok. Media thinks that things will be back to normal by end of week. As long as I can make it to Thursday I'll be golden. Working from home then flying to Miami Friday.

That sucks man. It's rediculous how things have been getting here in the states. Here's to hoping things turn around soon.

Luckily it hasn't been a huge inconvenience to me because I have enough to not worry about it for a few days. I might be sitting in a line Wednesday though. I'm not tore up about it.

What does surprise me is that holy crap something like this can happen - our infrastructure couldn't adjust to the situation. Really sobers you up.

I feel as if I'm looking at a sneak preview if it does it the fan one day.

...this may actually be illegal, depending on the prices. I did a case study in a Law & Economics class a couple years back about gas spikes when a hurricane hit Florida, and there are laws limiting how much the price of certain commodities (including gas) can rise in disaster areas.

Of course, outside of disaster areas, the law of supply and demand continues to reign supreme.

Yeah, you can just run the car off a couple of bean burritos.

actually many news stations and radios gave out numbers to report price hiking.

i think the fines were $25k and then $250k if done against the elderly

Yeah, that's a silly notion. Everyone knows that God hates old people anyway.

What's interesting to me is that, from an economic perspective, these limitations are actually worse than simply allowing stations to jack up prices. That is, if you think of an economic-based law as being for the benefit of the economy, these are "bad" laws.

I just had to laugh at the distinction there. As if there is some some direct link between old age and naivete.

Are you suggesting that deregulation and the absence of consumer-protections are good for the economy? Have you checked the news lately?

In certain economic systems, yes. It is.

EDIT: Major caveat -- Probably the biggest problem with many economic models in practice is that they tend to assume that consumers have are well-informed. Sadly, that's not the case in the real world. Even then, there's a strong degree of applicability, else we wouldn't be studying them to begin with.

only time i remember people freaking out about gas was when the entire east coast lost power. The lines for gas were miles long. Lots of fighting at the pump. Not good at all. Hopefully the price gougers will simma donna though. Nothing pisses me off more than someone making assloads of cash off of people that can't do a damn thing about it...
