Yea I had no idea that people were that damn good. And even that soldier was pulling off some amazing stuff.

Moar videos please.

All video discussions begin and end with Reptile: The Movie

http://vimeo.com/892826

You might have already seen it since it's so popular, but it's a 100% soldier video through the eyes of the world's best soldier, Reptile. He also plays for Pandemic.

EDIT - Keep in mind that all these videos are taken from matches in CEVO and other pro leagues, where it's a lot harder to pull this stuff off than on a pub.

Yeah, now you know why Blonde's signature is actually impressive, lol.

Watching Reptile is what inspired me to try to become a really good soldier. Obviously I have a loooooong way to go.

How did you like the shot at 3:47 in that video? Frickin unbelievable.

I'm positive we could make some similar videos with L2P and Noir if we had some dedicated video makers. Haven't speced Brand at all yet, but probably him too. Other class vids are kindof boring in comparison, even if they're played amazingly.

Yeah, it's true that it is a highlight video. And amazing shots/runs will happen with any good player that plays competitively.

Of course, I say that and then go spec Reptile during a match and see him almost always doing the right thing and accomplishing what he sets out to do, whereas I feel like I try to do something and fail time and time again during a match.

Then again, that's why he's on Pandemic and I'm not, lol.

Yeah... I don't honestly think I could play favorably against Reptile, but ditto on the fact that the Dummy vid is a highlight reel and I make a lot of those same types of shots - sure I miss a lot of them too, but I hit plenty. I couldn't help but notice that two of those kills Dummy got were revenges.

I couldn't play favorably against either one of them. Even though that's a highlight reel, I think the fact that he's hitting shots like that against people on some of the best TF2 teams out there doesn't take anything away from him. As for the revenges, best vs. best. I'm sure even they can't avoid getting killed all the time. For example, you and I both know that I've dominated you several times. However, we can also agree (Even though I talk shit) that you've dominated me MUCH more. Because of this though, my dominations were MUCH more epic! :p

Then again, that's why he's on Pandemic and I'm not, lol.

This pretty much sums it up. That guy was making shots like that while playing on the worlds best TF2 team. And against the other top teams.

I'd still pwn both of them though!!

I don't think dominations mean too much when you're a demo in competition. Many teams will use the demo as a kamikaze player to just jump and try to assassinate the medic. And demos die all the time since they tend to roam away from the medic, so I wouldn't take too much into account in terms of dominations and stuff.

But yeah, I'm sure all of us have made shots really similar to all those in the videos (although that one dummy pipe vs. devastation was pretty ridiculous and something I probably could never duplicate). I think it's more against the competition. He did that against Devastation, and we've played against them. I got absolutely rolled, as they're one of the better TF2 teams in NA.

Right. The thing about competitive play is that you really don't play for a solid kpd. You do what you have to to win. I get dominated all the time as a scout. You basically can't be in view of some of these guys for more than 30 seconds or you'll die.

As a demo, scouts will dominate you. Just a matter of time. The demo is a sitting duck for a scout unless you can land pipes. In competitive play at least.

Pubs and matches are different worlds for sure. All us TKO guys are relative noobs to lots of these guys we play. But we're slowly closing the gap. I'd say on a scale of 1-10, 10 is pandemic, 1 is uhhh a team of the worst players you can imagine, we're probably at 7.5 right now.

Funny thing about Reptile is that he has gotten better since this video was finished. I spectated one of his recent matches live, and he was consistently making shots like this. It wasn't just a few per match. He hit with almost every shot he took. Crazy.

Glork

...seen both videos. They're quite the inspiration. Dummy's in particular forced me to pay very close attention to timing when playing a Demo, and while my ability to snipe with pipe bombs has gotten miles better over the last couple of months, it's still nowhere near where I'd like it to be.

I think that's what makes pipes so important. They're the only weapon that will be effective for demos against scouts with whom they're directly engaged. Stickies travel too far and take too long to detonate, and you rely on the scout walking over them if you lay them at your feet. And the bottle just is too short range as a good scout will keep exactly the right distance to make it useless. Even pipes are a very mediocre weapon against scouts, but if you aren't good with them you'll just absolutely get eaten alive by scouts every time.

And regarding Reptile, I think I was actually spectating that same match, and yes it's ridiculous. I feel like the gap between him and me is about the same as me and someone who just picked up TF2. The thing that's different about him is just his amazing accuracy with rockets. And not just in the air. He hits people right at their feet like 90% of the time. And whenever he's isolated 1 on 1 with someone (all else being equal), I'm not sure I've ever seen him lose that battle.

I think the one Blonde was referring to was the TF2 ESL championship a week and a half ago, Pandemic vs. 4Kings (America's best team vs. Europe's best team).

They have something like a 1000 slot sourceTV channel where up to 1000 people can spectate or something like that. (I think it's actually a bunch of smaller 128 slot channels or something like that). But either way, you just need to get the password and get in on time. I think our slots filled up like a half hour before the match was scheduled to begin.

They're currently going to the Grand Finals of the CEVO Sennheiser Tournament after winning the B bracket. The Grand Finals start August 4th, so as far as I know that will probably be their next competitive match. I don't know anything about the sourceTV broadcasting of the match though.

Also, in big matches where you can't get into a sourceTV slot, you can always steam the shoutcast online, usually done by pwnage.tv or sometimes quadv (which is much, much better). This is just like streaming any other video online, only you don't get to control who you spectate, as it's done by the shoutcasters. Pandemic seems to get a lot of their matches cast.

EDIT - Yeah, I guess David's right that this thread has deviated from topic pretty significantly. If people are interested in learning more about it, feel free to start up threads here in the TKO forum asking about it, and we'll answer anything to the best of our knowledge. I happen to love watching competitive TF2 matches and spectating the best players in the world, even though I know people who would think it's ridiculous to enjoy watching someone else play a video game.

I know if you didn't play tfc you probably wouldn't be able to get into it as much, but he has some really good tfc soldier videos also.....

It was way harder to get airshots and stuff in tfc cause the models were smaller in proportion to the map size and the game was a lot faster.

I'll see if I can find a couple and post them....I have a couple match demos of me playing medic against him too.

He might have grown up a little but it sucked that he wasn't cool, he acted like he was gods gift to video games...but whatever.

Yeah, getting good a rocket jumping certainly takes some time. There are a lot of subtle movements that really make a huge difference in jumping. It's easy to be a mediocre rocket jumper but difficult to be a really good one.

Catch me on the server sometime and we can move to some jump maps or something like that on the TKO server and I'll show you what I know. I'm not nearly as proficient as someone like wonderwall, but I think I can do most of the most common jumps fine.

How do you jump now? I have a few jumps that I practice to get warmed up and stuff on certain maps. It's mostly muscle memory so practice goes a long way.

It's mostly muscle memory so practice goes a long way.This. And it doesn't just apply to stuff like rocket jumping. Very, very, VERY few people could pick up a game like TF2 and be able to blast others into and out of the sky with rockets just like that.

Great! That'd be awesome. I'm ok I guess. In game, whenever I really need to rocket jump somewhere I usually always make it. But sometimes I just fail. It's almost like I have to just not think about it too much to be able to do it. Whenever I play with Jokerz, he's always telling me "Panda, rocket jump with me up here!" I don't know if you've ever played with him when he plays soldier, but he's pretty aggressive. So in those instances, I just do it without even thinking about it. But whenever, I try to plan to rocket jump somewhere, I fail more. So I just need practice.

I think practice is the main thing to get the precise timing down.

Beyond that, I too am interested in this subject. Like I've read in many places that you should jump, then crouch and fire to get higher and do less self-damage. But it never works for me, at least not at all consistently. This is when Jokerz will see me and make fun of me. :p But when I used my tried-and-true method of very quickly crouching, then jumping, then and firing at the ground, I consistently get pretty high without too much self-damage. So IDK. Some people script this crap, but that's hella-lame and can't be used in competition (it would require wait commands, which are not permitted in any real competition).

For simple height jumps, I haven't seen much difference in the exact timing, and I usually come close to doing the jumping and crouching simultaneously. I have tried a lot of different timings without finding something that always works better.

IMO distance jumps are a little more complicated to get the timing and angles right, so that's what I've been working on more than anything lately.

I've noticed that if you get shot by anyone on the other team (even a single fragment of a shotty shell or pistol or minigun) at any point in the jump, you instantly stop going up.

Jump then crouch? I've never heard of that technique, gonna have to try that out. Yea went on a skills test map with Jokerz on his server (first for scout jumping and then for soldier rocket jumping) and I was amazed at how bad my timing was with rocket jumping and how much practice I needed. Please note that I said I've had problems getting this to work right. Even when I seem to get it just right, I still don't jump any higher than I can with crouch+jump+fire. That's always been my consistent way of "uber jumping" - basically a very quick tap of ctrl (croutch), and just as I'm taking my pinky off of ctrl, I'm very quickly tapping the spacebar (jump), and as my thumb is coming off of space, I'm clicking to fire (while looking straight down for height, or down and slightly back-right for distance).

I should probably practice on one of those skills maps sometime, too.

Yea I just wasn't aware that anyone was using the crouch technique with it. I'll have to look into that. I know when I was on with Jokerz, he didn't say anything about crouching. You absolutely have to crouch to get good height on your rocket jumps. You can do a regular jump if you want to get up to a medium sized ledge, but crouch jumping is a must to get up to the really high places. It does increase your jump height significantly.

Those Mach4 jumps are pretty good for learning how to jump horizontally because of the level's low ceiling.

Yea I was definitely getting more used to the akward motion I have to do with my controls to pull it off. I actually, made the jump from the balcony to the pillar several times. But that was with repeated attempts and taking my time. However, I did pull off the jump in game last night a couple times too. Let me know if/when I can come on over to TKO and practice again.

trick to going forward with a rocket jump is actually turning and shooting at an angle behind you. higher mouse sensitivity helps for this, and once you're up, you can change your projection using strafe a lot easier.

That, or strafe, a little before you shoot.

this sounds stupid, but if anyone remembers Super Mario 64.

were you jump, jump higher, then jump and use the winged cap.

if you can bhop good, on your 3rd jump shoot while strafing, and you'll go alot farther, and alot higher.

I just found another short video by Dummy.

http://www.noobflicks.com/watch/3042/dummy_tf2_random_kills

Not long, but some of these shots are just freaking nuts. He's ridiculous with pipes.

I once killed Blonde with a pipe while he was playing scout. That is all.

another reptile vid
Well that's not new, but still amazing. What I love is how you can tell he's doing the math in his head constantly... like pulling out the shotgun after firing a rocket at a low-HP opponent, knowing that if the rocket doesn't kill him, one or two shotgun shells should easily finish him off.

So the guy who created Reptile's video is actually one of the best snipers in the game. He made a frag video of himself and B||oodsire sniping in 6v6 matches. Here is the youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkZLJeQ1Nhc&feature=related&fmt=18

Extraordinarily well-edited, and the frags are top-notch. If you don't think a sniper vid can be entertaining, watch this.

Really good stuff here.

If I were that good of a sniper (and legit) - I probably wouldn't have AA in my name. But that's just me.

Oddly enough, it actually legitimizes them even moreso in the community, since AA is relatively well-known. They go back to TFC. Those who aren't familiar probably wouldn't assume it stands for Auto-Aim anyway.

Anytime I'm on a server with one of them I know I'm up for a tough challenge.

How does he get some of the head shots? He doesn't even shoot when the head is in the scope. it's like he's getting headshots for hitting shoulders.

Some of these are SourceTV demos I believe, which has an issue where the view doesn't coincide with what the player is actually seeing, due to the lag correction etc. The server's demo doesn't see exactly what the player sees, so some of them look off. Plus the questionable hitboxes in TF2 don't help the matter.

I actually watched the reptile one a while ago and the others posted in this thread I watched today.. Then I saw they were posted here, and I felt left out of contributing.

Yeah, I'll just throw that out there.

I don't recognize the Legend of Quake name, but this guy used to play on SF quite a bit as BunnyOfTheSky. He was good, I'll give him that.

He's not a bad player, but for some reason, I just don't like single kill frag videos. The only one I've ever enjoyed legitimately is Fragga's.
