** There is no demoman competition yet, this thread is only thoughts and ideas about it **
Timmah you made me think of something. Lets say we did demo vs demo. Would we enable crits or not?
One on hand, it is part of the game and a good demo will know how to use a crit sticky to his advantage, more of an advantage than just that it does more damage. On the other hand, should we really put that element of chance into the tourney? If crits are disabled, there will be no questions about the winner. Thoughts?
Well to be honest, demo also takes a bit of latency, people with lower pings can detonate a sticky faster with less lag then someone who has a 100+ ping, like myself, thats why I suck at demo..

This is why it should definately be pipe only. I personally think crits really have no place in a competition, but people are always allowed to disagree.

No crits, agreed. But no stickies? I use that as my primary weapon!

His ability to pipe well is something I've realized over time that separates a good demoman from a great demoman. Stickies you can just lay them where the enemy will be and then hit the trigger when they get there. Pipes have to be accurate and direct.

I have to disagree with your assessment there... who are these 'great' demos that you're referring to? I only use them in rare situations, like going through tunnels, taking out sentries from moderately long range, clearing a path when ubering into a big crowd, and as a last resort when I don't have time to reload the sticky launcher, and when I want to bank my shot. Even in tunnels I hesitate, tho...I've had a crit pipe hit a charging pyro at point blank range before he ever fired and I died, he lived. Stupid +50 health! Anyway...I could go on...I'll just say that I destroy other demo's that use pipes for their primary because I just run toward them, avoiding the pipes and their splash damage, and kill 'em with stickies. Stickies offer more possibilities than pipes, and aren't just about the ability to aim... otherwise it's just another sniper competition.

I think that winbombs are pretty much every demo's primary, though. But being really good with pipes I think is necessary to be able to defend yourself against really good players.

No problem.
Dummy used to play for Pandemic, pretty much the best TF2 team in the world. Now he plays for the Experiment, which is also up there.
There are a few other extraordinary demomen out there (Pandemic's alexwut is really good, so is George of The Doctors). Being that good with pipes helps deal with the awesome scouts that will otherwise tear a demo up.

Yea I had no idea that people were that damn good. And even that soldier was pulling off some amazing stuff.

You really only have to take trajectory into account with a demo. Predict where people will do an shoot well in front of them.
I have an idea for a pyro competiton.
have a soldier shoot a crit rocket and have the pyros reflect it back and forth until one of them messes up and gets insta-Gibbed.
they'll stand by dispensers, obviously.
-This idea was random and probably is the stupidest thing ive thought of.

I would <3 Demo Comp.
My only problem is, I'm only available on weekend (Th-Sun).

Yes! For a Demo Tourney. As others have said, nades work when shooting where someone WILL be and not directly at them. I have had more then a few unpleasent words directed at me for shots like that. Stickies are most Demos primary since you only get 4 shots with your nades and unless you hit the person they are useless and that goes double for Soldiers and Heavys since they can take 3 nades and walk away. You need stickies for the Tourney since you need to be good with both but I agree on the no crits. Bank shots with nades and hitting a moving target are good tests of skill but I pride myself on using the angles to get SGs using my stickies that other people weren't able to get with an Uber. To this day there are still Demos that don't know you can charge your freaking sticky shots!
Also, I refuse to beleive that video is legit. Guy has super high mouse sensitivity but he snaps to enemies and blasts them dead on. If a Sniper was doing that he'd get banned....

I'm pretty sure it was legit. The video contains segments from really high level clan matches; don't think anyone would use hacks in a competition like that.

I would say if it's a public competition then keep crits....The majority of the players that frequent these forums have probably never even played without crits..
I would say keep stickies....Like someone else said, if you take them out, it becomes an aiming and dodging competition......The strategies are diminished some.
I'm prolly about 50/50....I constantly switch back and forth.

Right ok. Good feedback. So we're going to make it critless for sure. I suggest playing or practicing more in the TKO servers to get used to critfree tf2. Also, stickies are definately go. It'll be similar to the sniper competition. A 1v1 demoman class competition where you may use any means necessary to kill your opponent.
By the looks of the the interest in this particular competition, this'll probably be the next tournament. Be on the lookout for sign ups.

crits = no. It's not a true competition if you add crits 'cuz there's too much of a luck factor added in.
Regarding stickies, we could try this, though....have half the matches be with stickies allowed and half without.
The next question is which map? I don't think the duel map would suffice.

Next question, killing your self now counts as a kill for the last guy to damage you, will it count like that in the Tourney? A guy could just keep killing himself to keep the otehr guy from scoring regular kills.

I would say that killing yourself would be a point for your opponent. It wouldn't make much sense to allow for no consequences for killing yourself.

All details will be given to you when its written up officially, but if it awards you a kill, then it is a kill. We had the guys reconnect right before they played to reset their scoreboard. So it was very easy to tell what the score was by just hitting tab and looking at your kills and deaths.
Also, why not a duel map for a 1v1? What kind of map are you looking for?

Best map would be Granary. A CP map with a warmup timer to let both players get on even ground. Unlike Well you can't spam the other guy before the round starts.

Because part of being a good demo is knowing how to use the terrain and such.

Anyone can camp the front entrance of 2fort as a demo. You just have to use the terrain. I know what you're saying, but I want both opponents to be completely aware that the other opponent is there. I want them both to have the same advantages. I want the demoman that aims best with is pipes and stickies to win.
All that aside. Here is a map with obstacles and cover. It's a little big for my taste, and I can see matches being long and drawn out. But its a compromise.

i think you forgot about aiming with the bottle...
and you know what this just made me think about. what if we did a one time tourny that would be 1v1 melee only. you enter as any class you want but have to stay that class through the whole tourny. melee only...maybe sweet, kinda cool...idk

Actually, no. When we had meleebarn in the rotation for a short while, spy became the most played class because you get insta-kill if you can get to someone's side/back.

And scout was popular on meleebarn and was quite annoying when he was running around quickly and batting people.

I'd probably go medic for the crits and then halfway through my first match remember there are none. I would then proceed to roll up into a ball and cry.
On a lighter note though, I found the most awesome smiley ever.:sign0027:
