View Full Version : Have you ever blown something off for TF2?

Have you ever lied to get out of doing something because you would rather have been playing TF2? My wifeys family lives very close by and we see quite a bit of them. I've uninvited myself to several free meals because, lets face it, sometimes I would rather just play TF2. I don't get a lot of free time, between commuting, working, parenting and trying to be a good husband. But lets face it, TF2 is mine and only mine. Sometimes you get a little selfish and just need to play. Maybe because its been a couple of days too many without playing, or ya just wanna blow off some steam (no pun intended). We just went to see John Mayer last Friday, my wife loves his music - me I could have cared less about being there. If I didn't know how important my time is with my wife and I didn't value the little time we actually get with just each other, I would have blown off the concert and gotten my sister-in-law to go in my place. I'm thinking my next personal day off from work will probably be lost to an all day TF2 session. I love having time I can use like that from my job.

So, has anyone skipped out on an unwanted obligation just to play? Work? Family?

I've skipped out on family, school, friends, you name it. (For CS though....) It's all good :party0018:

i took the whole day off for the pyro update (being a chemist is boring anyways).. i routinely have to do work in the dusk/night (one because its hot as hell right now) because id rather be playing than trimming my shrubs.

today was different..i played.. changed my brakes on my car.. now i will play again..haha..

but yea.. i totally blow off lots of dumber stuff just to play the game. you said it best.."its mine and only mine"

I've blown off little things, but nothing important. If it's something the wife and I both don't really want to go to then we won't, and I might play tf2 during that time.

Hey- it's ok, blow them off!!!

Seriously, how often do you go see your wife's family? IMO if it is more than once a week it is UNNECESSARY(unless they're dying, or something of that nature).
If it is your wife who wants you to go, well, you deal with her. If the family members are wanting you to go, you may get cut off from say, money if/when you need it.

When it comes to the concerts, well, tell her to see if someone who would enjoy it more than you(use those words, always works) wants to go. Tell her she'd have more fun with them, and that you'll def go w/her for an artist you both love.

Really, 75%ish of my GF's have done this type of thing, usually with some HUGE attempt at guilt trip-ing me(never works- my conscience is limited/hardly there) if I don't go. Of the remainder, I only had one GF who was psycho-crazy in her attempts of control(her fav thing), and another who would have rather just watched me play instead of going anyways.
I have yet to meet/have a gf who's family is as obsessive/in love w/me as much as the gf. So the family being dissapointed has yet to be a problem for me.

Another line that always works for me:
"At least I'm not smoking crack, if you want, I'll quit playing TF2 and start smoking crack, yeah, that'd be better"(in a serious and slightly sarcastic tone of voice) while looking them dead in the eyes with not a glimpse of "trying to be funny" on your face.

I've posted this video on another thread, but I don't think people can be warned enough. WOW does lower the male libido. Avoid WOW, please if you know someone with a WOW problem, help them or get them help before its too late.

I've pointed out to my wife that there are tons of vices that I could have. Expensive, life wrecking habits. Drugs, alcohol, strippers, gambling. I'm right there at home where she can see me. Past being a subscriber to SF there's no incured costs. My family lives pretty close by, but I might see one of them once, maybe twice in a month. We use her parents a couple of days a week for watching our 6 year old during the summer, and they don't even think about how often we see each other. I don't feel bad at all about blowing them off, but with the wifey, well what can I say?. Once in a while I suck it up for her (not very often) because I know I'm lucky to have someone that I can trust enough to sleep next to me and not smother me with my pillow.

I know I called in sick at my last job when San Andreas came out. I picked it up in the afternoon (I was working nights as a DJ for a company that owns several bars in and around Chicago) and I just couldn't wait til the next day when I couild have played all day. Worked my best "I'm really sick" routine and then enjoyed several hours of getting lost in GTA. I haven't had any real marathon sessions with TF2, but I think (cough cough) that one might be coming up soon.

One time my friend asked me if I wanted to play baseball, and I just felt like staying home and playing TF2. That was the only time though.

However, I'm a fairly big workaholic. Not because I feel compelled to do my work, but because I LIKE doing my work. I've blown off events, people, and even girls because I had to do some work.

No, I don't think he was. You have a wife? Mine has given me really hard time, at times, about playing TF2 too much - except she blows it out of proportion in her wording to characterize it as being mildly abusive to her. So yeah, I've gone this route and argued that it's not like I'm an alcoholic or doing drugs, or worse, just to make the point that all things considered, 2-3 hours of TF2 a day isn't all that bad.

my husband gives me a hard time about playing too much tf2...and now when I say I don't want to go out to the bar on the weekend with friends he claims it's because I'd rather play TF2...he's sort of right but why go to the bar and spend all sorts of money to stay out all night and be worthless the next day. If I stayed up until 2 in the morning playing TF2 instead of going to a bar until 2 I'd be ready for anything the next day..awake, happy and not hungover or exhausted from driving my drunk friends around all night (please note that I do not drink and drive...it's always either or. I have blown off things like going out with friends ....or watching a Star Trek Enterprise marathon with the hubby (that show is worse than a soap opera)
