I personally like LCDs more. I have both a plasma and an LCD and the LCD is used as my main television.

You send send me the plasma then E, kk?

Diz, id go for the LCD simply because the contrast radio is better, and overall I think LCDs are better as well.

actually, the plasma has the better contrast ratio, and the plasma is most likely going to be brighter. The plasma doesn't say the response time, but if you're not gaming on it, it shouldn't matter. Plasmas are big, heavy, and hot. LCDs are typically thinner, run cooler, give better response times, and are less expensive.

i am biased.. i own the 50 " viera and its little brother the 42". i couldnt be happier.. you will need to adjust the picture to taste for sure.

plasma..the blacks are darker.. lcds are SAID to have a longer life, but really by the time one of either dies, they will be beaming tv right into our brain mmmhmm

Mmmmmmmnnnn . . . Brain TV. But for now, go with the LCD. Pros and Cons aside, whatever you pick, you've gotta like it. If your local electonics store has both models out and running the same image (Best Buy and Circuit City usually do) take some time to watch each. Tell the sales people to take a hike. They get paid to talk and distract you, while softening you up for that extended (and usually worthless) service contact that the person at the register will try to scare you into buying. Look for sharpness, color contrast and take a look at the backside. You could be in for a surprise. My 36 inch LCD has twice the hookups as my parents 36 inch LCD. For some this isn't an issue. Also, go to Cnet.com. You should be able to find both TVs there under reviews. Go through editor and user reviews (I usually find these more useful) and see if you can pull them up for a side-by-side comparison. Pretty soon it's gonna all be laser LCDs and OLEDs and the current TVs will be the cheap ones.

when i was in the store doing the side by side comparison..i also asked for the remotes so i could adjust the picture to my liking. they DONT set the colors and contrast when they pin them up on the wall...they usually just plug them in ...which is a sure fire way for an ugly picture

I can't believe no one has asked the important questions, first.

1) How bright is the room this TV will go in? Are there any windows opposite where it will go, and do they tend to have much direct sunlight? Plasma's have a glass screen whereas LCDs do not - so LCDs have much less problem with glare.
2) How big is the room? If it's not a large room, you'll probably find 42" to be plenty big. Otherwsie, a 50" plasma may be worth it.

Aside from that, yeah, Plasma's have certain disadvantages like they require more power, are heavier, and aren't as slim; and LCD doesn't really have any disadvantages aside from not being able to do true black.

i fought with myself on this for a long, longgg time.

first of all both those brands are "meh" brands.

second, timmah is right... you need to know the brightness of the room

third, what are you going to do with it? which one are you going to do more: games or movies?

fourth, there's no way to determine contrast ratio, it's all bullshit

fifth, you NEEEEEED to go 5ms response time or lower and or 120hertz or higher if you're getting an LCD... otherwise you WILL notice the ghosting effect on LCDS

sixth... bigger is better. there's no doubt about that.

in my quest to find a TV, i've learned that Sony and Samsung are by far the nicest tvs out there. i'd recommend the 42" 650 series from Samsung, if anything... it looks so damn nice

Agreed. If the response times are identical go with the plasma :D

I would have to agree with tippo - samsung makes effing nice TV's (have a 56"? samsung DLP) my brother has a 50 something" plasma by samsung - both are awesome - i personally like the DLP better, but its in a darker room so it tends to look a little richer in color

I can however say the plasma is very heavy, and produces a lot of heat (so im assuming uses a shit ton of power) and for that reason i would tend to lean towards an LCD even if it is a bit smaller

if you have a chance a side by side comparison is probably your best bet

:party0045::party0045::party0045::party0045: <- WTF are these? banana dance party headed your way - and that can only lead to one thing - WWITB!!!

definitely look toward the Samsung 650 series... a 40 inch costs about 1400-1600 depending where you find it, a 46" cost about 1800... may it cost more you'll definitely love it. by the way it's LCD, but it doesn't matter because it has no flaws other than no true black. it's response time and hertz times are so fast there's barely if any ghosting. i regret it for not buying one.

Bitch. Buy me something or GTFO :)

Good thing you didn't get a plasma. They also run very hot and take up a crap load of electricity. With all the money you save on electric bills you can prolly buy me a tv.
