View Full Version : iPhone 3G - Did you do it?

Just wondering how many of you people lined up for a 3G on Friday. For those who have it, what apps have you found that you like?

One of the best apps I've found so far is Shazam. You can record a sample of music from anywhere (i.e. radio) and it tells you who the artist/album is. Lots of fun and its free :)

I'd also recommend Texas Hold Em. Good game and productivity killer for $5.

I'm voting "Who cares? GTFO Fuu" because it's the closest thing to "I already have a PDA from work with which I'm allowed a reasonable amount of personal use so I don't have enough reason to drop hundreds of dollars on another fancy phone just to get faster Internet for the 15 minutes a day that I'm away from a computer."

i'm stuck under contract to verizon for like another million years, so it doesn't matter. plus i have a PDA alike timmah also for work, so again it doesn't matter. would i switch to a iPhone if i had the chance? probably not. GTFO fuu

I voted Who cares 'cause I'm never that far away from a computer if I need one and I just use my celly for phone calls so no need for all the fancies here. Not necessarily voting for GTFO Fuu just had no other choice.:fighting0002:

i've been with verizon for 7 years and hate AT&T with a passion, but i'm considering the iphone heavily right now. verizon doesnt have anything with near the seemless functionality as the iphone, which is really disappointing. i've looked at the htc touch, the dare and the voyager and none of them compare to the features of the iphone.

the whole this is painful because i'm hardly ever home or have regular access to the computer so i spend a lot of time on my phone. i've had a curve for the past week as a replacement for my env and unfortunately neither phone quite cuts it.

verizon has the blackberry pearl and also now in the palm centro.
ya they dont have wifi, but are u rly going to be in a place that has wifi, when u can use the one u have at home.
i have the 30$ unlimited package on my phone (centro att) im on it all the time but im never rly home either. (unless its a day off or somethig)
plus having the iphone there are addition charges a month for having it or something like that.
and y would u hate att with a passion, its better than verizon. ATT owns over 75 % of the cell towers in the US therefore better coverage!
verizon u cant use unlocked phones either. CDMA FTL!

I have yet to know someone who genuinely enjoys their blackberry, they're full of fail -_-. Even in my town which is fairly small there is very few spots downtown where i can't pick up free wi-fi. I commute to Salt Lake City a lot and I can pick up wi-fi from pretty much anywhere in the city.

I'll stick w/my Chocolate, no iSuckage for me.
iAnything to me just means iTunes, which means more suckage.

No modification. (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/blog/2007/09/iphone-hacking-final-word.html)
"OK, you buy an iPhone, you use it according to its hardware and software capabilities, and you're happy. Unless you want to take the phone apart and re-solder components, or download software to it using techniques devised by non-Apple programmers. If you do that, should you expect that your iPhone would continue to work exactly as Apple originally gave it to you?
Apple's Phil Schiller has said that Apple is not specifically devising its software updates to block hacked phones. Instead, the company's warnings are meant to let iPhone owners know that some tiny bit of programming they include in an update might break third-party apps. I take Phil at his word. So, if you modify your iPhone, and it later doesn't work, you're on your own."
- - -
And an even better reason why I 'd never buy one:

iPhone: NSA iSnoop Device? (http://www.inteldaily.com/?c=120&a=2824)
"According to a Russian hacker team called “web-hack,” Apple’s much heralded and overly hyped iPhone contains “a built-in function which sends all data from an iPhone to a specified web-server. Contacts from a phonebook, SMS, recent calls, history of Safari browser” can be hijacked, as the VS iPhone blog reports.

In a white paper, according to the blog, the Russians indicate a possible “debug feature or a built-in backdoor module for some governmental structures,” i.e., the National Security Agency, the lead governmental structure responsible for violating en masse the constitutional rights of Americans.

Of course, it helps that “Apple has chosen AT&T, the best and most popular carrier in the US with over 62 million subscribers, to be Apple’s exclusive carrier partner for iPhone in the United States,” as the AT&T website boasts. As we know, the telecom leviathan illegally collaborated with the NSA to break the law.

“AT&T violated the law, and the rights of its customers, by allowing and assisting with the illegal wiretapping and data-mining. The government’s spying program on ordinary Americans would not be possible without AT&T collaborating in violating your privacy,” explains an Electronic Frontier Foundation FAQ. “EFF alleges that under the NSA domestic spying program, major telecommunications companies—and AT&T specifically—gave the NSA direct access to their vast databases of communications records, including information about whom their customers have phoned or emailed with in the past. EFF alleges that AT&T, in addition to allowing the NSA direct access to the phone and Internet communications passing over its network, and gave the government unfettered access to its over 300 terabyte ‘Daytona’ database of caller information—one of the largest databases in the world.”

I'm paranoid.

It's time for me to buy a new phone. I currently have Verizon and have been ready to switch to AT&T for awhile now. Verizon has pissed me off for the usual reasons and I figured I'd let AT&T piss me off for awhile since we have discounts to either through work.

So, I just have to figure out which phone to get. I've looked at the iphone and while it seems nice, I really don't think I'd use it much. I really don't talk to many people and I'm usually near a pc anyway so I think it would be wasted on me.

You can also get a refurb blackberry for cheap, but same deal, I think I wouldn't use it.

What I would really, really like however is the Amazon Kindle. I got a buttload of pdf and I do not like sitting at the pc to read those. Also great for tech manuals. I had to learn a new niche operating system (HP's non-stop kernel) and it wasn't like you could get a dummies book for it. I would have liked to lounge in my sofa and read the manuals and could have with that thing. Also great for travel.

lol, I knew that this thread would receive a heavy negative response. I for one like the iPhone and haven't really had any complaints about it other than the 3G kills battery life. I've tried many different phones and seem to like this one best. Had the Pearl prior to the iPhone and while it's good at text messaging, emailing, I didn't like the web browsing experience and the music player app is horrible. I had a HTC a while back, which was great, but I didn't like WM as much. Used tons of Moto's/SE's, they're alright but the software always sucks too.
I haven't used Nokia's since the 6xxx series, so don't know about those much - hear they are good, so maybe in the future sometime, I'll pick another up.

Yeah, this is always in the back of my head. Just because I don't really use that stuff now doesn't mean I won't change my habits if they're easily accessible. Besides, it's not like there's some other phone out there that has really caught my eye. Like you say, if I go through the trouble of switching I might as well do it up right.

I went and did it, and I love it.

Keep in mind that I haven't upgraded my cell in like 5 years - damn thing was a rotary dial.

3G does eat battery life, but since it uses the same charger as my iPod there's always a power source available somewhere.

I'm going on a business trip tomorrow and I'm very excited to have access to the net in the airport, since I don't travel with a laptop and the PSP browser is painfully slow. I'd like to use the iPod on it during travel but will prolly have to save the battery for the GPS when we land.

Now talk to me after I get my bill. I know what I'm in for.

I'm very seriously considering one right now... was actually going to pick one up yesterday, but the Best Buy by my place was out of the 8GB ones, which is what I'm looking for. (Instead, I got a new computer monitor.)

I like my blackberry and the BES I'm running :D

I am using the 8820 right now and am waiting for the Bold because of the camera addition that was missing on my current.

I have tried both windows mobile and blackberry's for email and I have to say from my experience Blackberry is a lot quicker with greater options and manageability.

I like how with the BES my CEO lost his phone in Mexico called me and I sent a wipe and kill signal to his device so none of his personal info was compromised :D.

I'm still loving the 3G. Battery life sucks, still a lot of missing features/apps, but like the fact that they can still add a lot of stuff in via future f/w. Mohican, if you've jailbroken your phone, get PDAnet from Cydia. Can use the iPhone for tethering as long as you have a decent data plan.

Interested to see the G1 IRL and also check out Google Market. Don't think I'll be looking at another blackberry til the Storm (touchscreen one?) comes out. HTC Dream HD is also something to look at. Guess I'm a sucker for large screens.

I have a $30 for 6GB plan. Closest to unlimited I'm ever gonna get (sad really, isn't it...)... There are still lots of good free applications in the app store and many good applications on cydia. I could think of maybe a couple that would interest you enough that you might pay for it :) First one that comes to mind is dynalicious (or something along those lines). It's a program that records your 0-60 and quarter mile times and can give you an idea of your bhp. Works relatively well for what it is, but it costs I think 5 or 10 dollars. There's a free one in development, but apparently isn't as polished at the moment.
