I'm currently using a Rio Karma (no longer in business, current technology being used by Trekstor now) as my mp3 player. I've had to do some work on it to keep it going, but the end may be near. I could buy a new battery off ebay and I have found sites that will let me convert it from a hard drive to a compact flash. I currently have 20GB of storage. I like the Karma for several reasons. It plays back louder than most of the other ones I've ever tried, I can set it to shuffle through everything on it or within a specific genre, artist, or album. The EQ settings can be the typical presets or 3 custom ones as well. It will also mix betweeen songs (up to 3 seconds of overlap) for gapless playback.
I have far more than 20GB of music in my library (for 9 of the 15 years I spent working in bars and nightclubs I was a DJ) I also transcode lots of video for me and for my wife so we can watch movies and TV shows on our PSPs. (She still hasn't forgiven me for dumping season 2 of Greys anatomy). But if I could have the video on with my music that would be cool.
So, are there any music whores (you have lots of music) out there, and what are you using for playing your music on the go. Also, could you tell me what you like about your current player.

I got the creative Zen 8gb one. Its pretty good just wish it was touch screen :) I only use it if my family plans to go out. Only thing that sucks is buttons are loud and its hard to use with 1 hand other than that its a good mp3.

I have about 100gb of music on my server. Actually trying to trim that down to just the songs that are decent or better.
Got a free 30gb classic iPod (gen4? it's thin), so I keep it somewhat full and rate every song I listen to, and then delete anything with 1 star. I may get a newer one later on with a bigger screen once I get my music paired down, but too early to tell... someday.

I really don't know a hole lot about other mp3 players but I like the Ipod. The newest generation is somewhat laggy, but if you have a growing library the 80gig from last generation is what i have. I like it because of its shuffle somewhat easy search through the list (I have only about 25 30 gigs of music) and can if I wanted to play videos. The games are good for killing time as well, though the stock ones are rather slow to sucky depending on what type of games your willing to play while bored. The reason i recommend the 80 from last is that is does have a search function. Also what Timmah said about the rating system and easy to set up play lists. It has a genre or artist or album playlist built in like the one you like, but it might be more limited then what your used to I'm not entirely sure. The battery life does need some help though. (probably 15 or so hours just music, Videos of games will sap it real quick though.) Anyway thats my input.

Ipods have had the bad battery rap since the first ones. A slick device for sure, and incredibly well marketed. They developed the iconic stature of their players so that even though there were and still are better players out there, ipod is still the device to carry your music and videos around on. I have been looking at the Creative Zen players. Available in 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32GB with an SD memory slot to expand your players capacity even further.

I'm leaning towards this player, but I've only talked to people with older creative players.
The Zune??? Don't know anyone with one.
I was looking at the trekstor Vibez. It has the same interface I'm used to, but it only goes up to 12Gb with no memory expansion. If you want FM radio you have to buy a separate tuner card that installs under the battery. The screen is color, unlike my old old Rio Karma. It's a good device for someone that doesnt need a huge screen or lots of memory.

I'm just lookin for any input people have on their players and how they handle their music.

I think my collection is running around 50gbs right now, although a good chunk of that is flac. I only have 4500 songs, too picky to build one of those gigantic 25-50k song collections. I've always wanted an iPod, but I can't think of when I'd use it. I'm not allowed to have one at work and I have most of my collection in CD form in my car. So, no help from me on that.

All my music is in FLAC, so it's a very large amount of music size-wise, but maybe not as many songs as some of you might have.
My suggestion is to ditch MP3 and compressed audio all together and start migrating your music collection over to FLAC (if you have the source media). MP3 sounds like total shit.
Invest in any of these...

I encode all my mp3s using 192kbps and honestly can't tell the difference between the source (CDs) and the mp3s. So thanks for the suggestion, but I'll pass.

I have had an 2gb RCA lyra with a hard drive (will never do that again) Hard drive has the common issue of "becoming corrupted".....permanently. I currently use a Sansa e250 and i really enjoy it. I would recommend purchasing anything that rockbox supports and has expandable memory. There is no limit to expandable size at that point. Determine if you want one that supports video and whether another battery (rechargeable) can be purchased and replaced cheaply and easily. Then physical size. too big? Big enough screen? customer service support reliability. Those are the big areas to touch on. :)

I couldn't tell the difference either until I put a soundcard in and started using headphones just for music listening. IMO it's too small of a difference to truly matter. I keep the .flacs simply because I have the room and it's nice to know I have backups for my cds.
and sryden is ftw cuz he is a fellow waffler
