View Full Version : Thoughts/Feelings about the Pyro Updates
Self explanitory. And if you play with me you know how I feel about this... cough nerfthepyros cough. Anyways I'm glad to see they are finally noticing the huge advantage the pyro has over other classes. So far what I've read they fixed was the critting backburner from all directions.
They said once the backburner hit a crit in the back it would malfunction and count everyother hit from any angle as a crit also. I saw some ppl using this technique by turning in a circle while using the backburner, so yay on that one.
I hate the airburst affecting ubers, mainly bc if there are 2 or more pyros there, they can easily push an uber apart. Demo at least requires skill.. lol

I think after the fervor for pyros die down a little and there aren't 7 per team it wont be quite so unbalancing. I think before the patch the soldier or demo totally pwnd pyros at least now they have tools to fight back a little. I am glad they fix the multi-directional crits tho that was needed badly

well i stopped playing pyro for like 3 months. because i was tired of just getting blown up every which way i turned. SO..i played soldier, and saw how much i was barely a factor as a pyro (without a medic). ...the update has empowered the pyro to at least not be pinned down by a demo or soldier. ...
i, for one, have never used the air cannon. I even think it is annoying, but i played pyro before it, so the backburner was a natural choice for me.
will there be further nerfing...after the reinstatement of fall-off damage and recalcing the backburner....probably.. but if they nerf it to far, it will just go back to being a "fun" class and not a very effective one.

I feel they pretty much fixed the problems with the backburner and the fall-off damage. Now it is, like elemantal said, a viable class for actual play.

i think alot of the ill will is because people are so used to running over pyros. and now that it is a bit harder (especially with any half decent pyro).. people are all crying off balance. as far as i see it, the off balance was the fact that the pyro was so easy to kill.. when i was in my post pyro soldier kick, i didnt fear a pyro...no reason to.. juggle the pyro, shoot a rocket anywhere near where they would land.. splat, probably didnt even lose any health.
what i find funny is that the air cannon, when used ON me, has saved my life at least 50 times. The person so had me dead to rights and decided to puff me away out of range of their weapons...i love it.

I for one LOVE the ACompressor, and as for the backburner I think the only time I've used it is in the achievement servers.
Really, how hard is it to kill/stop/do the same to a pyro trying to blast the medic/other char? Not hard. Happens to me all the time!
Maybe they should just turn it off if the pyro themselves are ubered. That seems more fair, in an uber vs. ubered pyro situation.
If they "fixed" the facestab for spy, that still happens to me, actually I think even more now.. but still has no bearing w/me and the bburner.
Even when the ammo for demo/soldier went down, people complained it was this so called "nerfing".......
I say wtfe, adapt or die, he he.

I also like the air compressor. It stops annoying demos and soldiers from spamming and also makes them waste their ammo, forcing them to switch weapons so I run in and flame them. However, im more of an ambush pyro and the backburner makes me so much deadlier with the instant crits on an unsuspecting heavy/medic/engi/etc. Im averaging at least a 3-1 kill ratio with that thing. Oh and I love the axetinguisher, makes killing heavies go so much faster.
Hard to say... I'd like to see games where there weren't half pyro's on both teams... then I could make more of an educated guess. Seems like I only get killed by pyros here lately.

I enjoy the Air Burst, so much so that I never really make much use of the Backburner at all; I keep the Axtinguisher equipped because it's helpful, and because I never used the regular Fireaxe anyway (I suck at melee, as most of you have probably found out over my time here). As far as the rest of the update goes, it was a little frightening at first with the lack of falloff and the multi-angle Backburner crits, but now that those have been adjusted I no longer cry foul. I'd agree with those that say that this has finally brought Pyro up to playable standards that other classes take note of instead of using the same easy techniques to wipe off the map like a troublesome fly.
hrm the air burst is really fun , especially on those reflect rocket kills. The backburner has earned a special place for me though , since it makes pyros really lethal from behind , and the extra 50 health isnt anything to just shrug off.
The flare gun is ok , but after i got the achivement for it , i went back to the shotty , more useful
axetinguisher is pure wins.

I think they have it about where it should be now. I can still rack up the kills as pyro so long as there isn't a ton of sentries (I started off with a 30:0 ratio on 2fort (in 0sec respawn) yesterday before I finally got killed), so the pyro is definitely still a playable class by any standards. And tonight as demo man, I wasn't completely helpless once a pyro got within range. I didn't survive these encounters as often as I did before the pyro update, but at least I killed my share of pyros. At least I didn't find myself cursing the pyro update anymore.

pyros are kinda op. its not so bad with 1 or 2 on a team, but with 4+ and uber pyros, its completely unbalanced. im playing something else for a while.
edit: Oh I forgot, the airburst gun is completely out of balance when a good pyro can pretty much prevent an uber from accomplishing anything. which was the whole point of an uber.

A good demoman can also do the same thing to an uber. Instead of trying to kill me, a smart pyro pushed me off of C on gravelpit multiple times. Dont say that the compressed air is out of balance because it makes pyros more deadly, solution to that is kill or avoid the pyro.

Fixing the falloff damage was MUCH needed, as it didn't make sense to have zero falloff.
I don't like the effect the airburst has on people. Projectile reflecting I'm all right with, but shooting people halfway across the room is a bit too much for me. And I think an extra 25 health might have been more appropriate for the backburner.
I don't dislike the changes they made, per se. But I think they went a little overboard with the soldier nerf at the same time.
Oh and the flare gun really annoys me. But it's definitely not OP. In fact, I'm not too sure why you'd use it over the shotgun.

I'm getting use to the pyro update, its just different because it really changed the gameplay of TF2. It brought the pyro to a more even playing field with the other classes; however, I think they did it by sacrificing the skill that the other classes need to perform well.
As for the A.C, I'm kind of on the fence. On one hand, I really like the idea of deflecting rockets and bombs. On the other hand, I really hate how it effects ubers now. Its VERY easy to dislodge a medic from an uber, compared to the skill it takes to do it with a soldier or demo. I also hate how it can clear stickies so easy and not really have a reload time like soldier has.
My last fear is that this pyro patch will turn into a trend, that everytime a new patch comes out it changes game play towards the favor of the updated class.....I'm a scared...somebody hold me...hehe

as far as the concept of the weapons go i think they're pretty good. i'm glad valve fixed the fall off damage and the crits. i didn't realize the crits were happening and just figured i was too slow and people were running circles around me ;o)
i like the air cannon. especially on gravelpit like someone already mentioned.
what i still don't get is why they bumped the health level up to 225 making a very fast class have the 2nd most health. this combination made playing soldier extremely frustrating since the pyro is now both faster and has more health. it used to be when you got ambushed you had a chance at staying alive, now if 2 pyros start running at me from even a modest distance i might as well not even try. i understood the new syringe gun that made the medic a little harder to kill. the medic was pretty much defenseless. i don't understand why the pyro needed to be harder to kill. pyros that knew what they were doing before didn't run straight at soldiers, they waited around corners or went after the medics or got an uber so they could maximize their abilities. what's the point of trying to think about how to be a better pyro if you can live long enough to make a straight run at someone.
i'm only an average player, but least when i was playing soldier before i felt like i could contribute something to the team. now it seems the only way the soldier is even moderately useful is to spam from all the way across the map while your team's pyros try kill their team's pyros.
i sure hope that when the heavy update comes out they give him the shoes of mercury or something to make him the 2nd fastest class...

i hate pyro also. i mean i kill the *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$er and im still burning to death. h8. but anyways, i will remove my nerfthepyros tag once they cant push me around with airblast when im ubered. until then... NERFTHEPYROS! :confused0010:
my only real problem is I love playign soldier. But honestly, now there is almost no point. I can literally shoot 4 rockets that hit the pyro in the feet, and still they kill me and they have hp left. Or as heavy/demo, I use an uber for a shot to take out a sg or clear out some ppl, and since there are 3-5 pyros on each team, at least 2 or 3 blow me all over the map until my uber is up then I burn to death. The increase in pyro hp, backburner, flare gun, airblast (on reg ppl or projectiles) is completely understandable and I agree was needed. But I do believe they are still a little overpowered but I do think Valve will be fixing this.
Hopefully by giving soldier more ammo and high dmg.

What I notice about the soldier is that rockets do more damage to the soldier who fires them. I never used to kill myself fighting a pyro but now it seems to happen very often.

It was a 40% damage reduction that they used to have in there, but they removed it so at point blank the rockets do as much damage to a soldier as the guy he shoots. So if you're facing a pyro who knows how to use the air blast, you're in trouble.

I've seen a lot of soldiers accidental suicide due to the change they made to the rocket damage. I don't play soldier often, but I still fail to see what the purpose of that was.
On pyros: I agree that the flare gun is less useful than the shotgun. I used the flare gun for a while and found myself in serious trouble against other pyros, or enemies who are fleeing. On the rare occasion I do play pyro, I prefer the air burst to the backburner mostly for keeping ubers back or reflecting projectiles (neither of which I'm particularly good at.) However, since they fixed the fall off and the crits, the Backburner seems a lot more fair - it does seem to crit more from the back than from the front or sides, so a Backburner pyro who gets behind someone probably deserves the crits he gets. I still don't agree with the +50 health, though.
In short: The flare gun is silly and largely pointless in most cases, the Backburner is better now that they added fall off, air burst is really annoying but useful, and the Axtinguisher is pure win.
