View Full Version : Playstyle

Thought I would open up this thread of discussion with a poll, maybe get some information sharing going and up the ante on everyones skill levels. So, what IS your playstyle? Do you hang back for headshots and rocket spam? Skulk in the corners for easy backstabs and ambushes? Kamikaze style with white headband flying? Lets hear it. I realize people may say that their style can't be defined or some bullshit like that, and some people are just plain fin good. But pick one you think fits best and explain yourself. We're always arguing about stupid shit in "this class or person is too powerful" threads, and people are always explaining how they pwn to defend themselves (scharn is the most prominent example of this) So why not have a friendly discussion about heavy sights vs heavy gun placement or the finer points of pwning with pyro etc etc.

Anywho, I chose suicidal and heres my explanation.

I play alot of pyro and I'm very goal oriented vs frag oriented. If I have to kill myself to take out a sentry because no one else will, I'll do it(not to mention it feels pretty badass to take out a lvl 3 sentry without a medic or any support). If I think I can take down a medic before he really gets away and it'll cost me my life, I'll still do it. If I have to stand in a door to slow another ubered pyro from wiping out a bunch of medics or a sentry behind me, again, I'll do it. So thats why i chose suicidal. When I'm not sacrificing myself for the greater good I always keep moving and use my shotty on anything that moves and get in close for the flame, run, shotgun to the back kills if the opportunity presents itself. I also do alot of jumping, getting flung halfway across the map from a couple stickies if way better then exploding in a cloud of blood vapor any day. So if you find your self in close quarters with a soldier or running into a demo trap you didn't see, jump, it just may save your life. If another pyro is stupid enough to go mano a mano with me I just keep moving and mimic their moves while keeping parallel to their side also, the shotty is your best friend in pyro v pyro combat. Uber me? self explanatory, chase the *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$ers down.

Thats it for me, if you're gonna explain your skillz, stick to the one class you're really good at our these posts could get ridiculously long.

I picked Stealthy because it's the most fitting. I'm not shy about being in the thick of battle, but I always look for a tactical advantage - so I wouldn't call myself "suicidal".

//edit: after reading Iron Lung's edit, I realized I'm often suicidal. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentional. If I can push all the way to the RED team's spawn, and keep them occupied for a while, I will - in the hopes that the rest of my team can easily cap. Sometimes I forget that the uber only lasts 10 seconds. Sometimes I just get into a rhythm. The important thing is to keep moving, and I don't just mean strafing in one little spot. I mean, keep moving around the map, so that when you kill someone, when they come for you after they respawn, you're not where they expect you to be. Moving constantly also helps keep your reactions and aiming more fluid.

Yeah, I'm more of suicidal-stealthy.
A very good mix of it I should say.

I'm the same as ILung when it comes to pyro, but as for sac'ing myself for the betterment of the team, I'll do it with most characters.

Demo- Sticky sticky sticky, or use them as "delayed rockets" sort to speak. I don't leave them if I can't see them, unless it's on that edge of others winning.

Spy- I like to wait a minute for the team to be attacking stuff before I sap, then after the engies rebuild/leave or run out of metal I sap. I like to jump around and on their stuff so they can't kill me, unless a sold/demo/pyro is around then I don't last long. I also hardly try to get to their spawn w/o having enough cloak. Sometimes it takes 2-3 cloakings for me to get where I want safely and unnoticed.

Soldier- Don't play that much anymore, replaced w/demo. Always stayed 2-3 teammates behind going in first, shot rockets at packs never single targets unless needed.

Heavy- don't play much either, I like to ambush w/heavies as much as pyros. Jumping out windows(B cap on gravelpit), around corners, etc.

Scout- Run run run. Usually to the point, rarely just try to kill w/scout.

engie/sniper/medic- self explanatory, nothing anyone else wouldn't do, nothing special. Keep building, avoid dying.

That's about it, not gonna tell all meh secrets :)!

Definitely suicidal. If I'm medic, I'll try any save as many as I can. If not, then it's usually because I'm defending or trying to accomplish something in particular (cap a point, destroy a sentry) because I still haven't gotten my aim good enough to simply chase the other team around. Don't know that I have much strategy beyond that to talk about.

It really depends on what class I'm playing. These days I play more as soldier and pyro then anything, so suicidal seems to be the way Play them. When I'm heavy I try to go nowhere open without a medic, but seeming as usually there are more interesting people to heal the medics tend to over look me. When I'm medic, I tend to be slightly suicidal with a side of shy depending on whats happening. I'm not really patient/smart enough for stealthy (damn end of the weapon), and I can't aim fast and well enough for sniper.

I like being an offensive engie [building teleports, placing SGs and dispensers in annoying spots]. It's more of a challenge that way, and it really helps the team out. Especially on CP maps when the respawn is so far away.

I'm kamikaze. I just spray my fire around and hope it catches everyone on fire and they all die. If I am playing Engie then I guess I like to put my gun where I'll get lots of kills which puts it and my character at risk...but good times. Time to play bye.

Definitely Suicidal. Even as a medic I'm not afraid to rush with that suicidal pyro unless we REALLY need a uber to get anywhere. I swear, no matter the class I play, I don't think I touch my back arrow, it's always straight forward and looking for something to kill. I guess that's why I don't play demo anymore. I always see Demos backpedaling. Some call that smart playing. I call that "Stop being a WUSSY".

Of course, that might be one of the reasons I'm still under a 1.0 KPD

I would describe my play style as stealthy/suicidal. As spy and pyro I will often sneak my way behind the enemy's offensive front. Once I'm behind everyone I rush forward and take out as many people as I can.

As an engineer I will play safe/shy. I usually hang out in the back, but never so far as to lose track of where the team is.

As every other class I tend to play safe, preferring to kill the enemy as they come to me.

Since I primarily play Medic on the Stompfest servers, I like to be a Surprise! Medic with an Uber and Stickies/Fire/Rockets/Bullets Everywhere, depending on who I uber. This isn't to say I won't follow someone into the thick of it, but in general I prefer to stay back and stay alive as long as possible to get as many ubers as I can - and thus cause as much damage as possible. So I guess a combination of Safe and Stealthy.

In the rare case I play something else, it's usually the "Safe" way - a defensive Heavy, a defensive Engineer, a defensive Demoman... very boring, really.

Thats just a lame way of getting out of this thread. I've accomplished some badassery in my time and I don't think anyones gonna call me a bad player but that doesn't mean I don't have a style.

What i'm saying is, yes I pwn, this is how I do it, if you like to play a bit suicidal too, here is how I make it work for me. Just saying you're "good" and can't be categorized is a cop out. Take pros for example, yeah hes good and fairly diverse, but I'd still call him a "ranged" player cause the most pwnage I see coming from him is sniping.
Just cause blonde can walk into a shit storm, kill 10 people and walk away with 50% health doesn't make him not suicidal, it just makes him good at playing that way, follow?

//edit. Side note anything I say here is regarding pub play, obviously if I played suicidal come match time I wouldn't be on a team

I couldn't really choose anything since I play 90% medic, but my style of play consists of sticking with an offensive class like a demo, heavy, soldier, or pyro, and staying with them as long as possible. It drives me insane when I see medics that don't stick with a certain individual, only to heal them up and start to heal someone else as that guy runs out into the middle of the fight thinking the medic is right behind him.

If the fight gets intense enough, or I feel that I can use the medic's speed advantage of someone, I will go in for a melee kill. I prefer that over using the needle gun or blutsauger, although I'll use the blutsauger when being chased by a pyro or if there are enemies at a distance that need supression with a shower of needles.

When I play medic, it's usually because my team only had 1 or none medics, and the only time I'm not healing injured teammates is when I'm charging with an uber. The screen clearly shows when you're being healed vs not being healed. I try to share the love as much as possible - if someone thinks I'm just going to follow them around when other teammates are on fire/near death/calling for a medic, they're respectfully mistaken. Again, the exceptions to this are when I have an uber ready (in which case your point is valid because that player may run out expecting the uber) and, to some degree, when there's only one good offensive player on the team (in the latter case, I would probably go demo and suggest someone else go medic).

When a medic stays with me, I always consider it a welcome surprise, but never expect it. I guess I don't understand suicidal medics. I had a perma-medic yesterday that was at ~10 health and I had to tell him - "dude... that health right there, get it" after he ran right past it twice. And that's not rare, either. It's like... as much as I like having a medic that focuses on nothing but healing me and keeping up with me regardless of the consequences, the line "He's no good to me dead" comes to mind. If he heals everyone on the team, that's more firepower around me and less chance that I will die and more chance that our team will win. The stats are nice, but I'd rather win.

As an almost full time medic I have to agree with Timmah. I try to share the love as much as possible unless I'm uber ready or we have a specific goal to complete (i.e take out that sentry gun around the corner). My biggest sin is I get greedy with popping the ubers waiting too long or for more targets then as my user title states I become a crit magnet.:)

I'm definitely a suicidal/stealthy player. On the suicidal side, with every class with the exception of sniper and spy, my goals are always to 1) Kill as many people as possible for my own personal satisfaction and 2) Kill as many people as possible to serve the team's goals at any given time. As scout, I'm really agressive. l like to challenge myself to see how many people I can bat to death in one life! I'm like that with all the other classes too I guess but especially as soldier. You guys are gonna laugh (But it doesn't really matter because i'm sure i've dominated many of you under these conditions) But before I built my gaming pc with my MSI OC 8800GT (To me, pound for pound best graphics card ever--Thread coming soon) I used to play on my 'everyday' laptop with integrated graphics. Now which integrated chip was it? The imfamous Intel GMA 950!! I think my highest framerate at any given point when there was stuff going on was like 12-14fps! Pathetic!!!! And the only class I could do well with was soldier. Because of all the lag, I had no choice but to be agressive lol.

Now on the hand, when I play as spy (which isn't that often) of course, i'm gonna be as stealthy as possible because that's the whole point. Same goes for when I play sniper. But there are exceptions to that because at times I get really agressive as sniper too. So far my record is 16 headshots in row! I know alot of you have done better than that but considering that I just recently started playing as sniper alot, I'd say that's pretty good huh?

Agreeing with AzzSazzin who agrees with Timmah. I try to heal as many people as I can unless I'm with someone charging into the front lines, or if I have an uber.

Like everyone else, it completely depends on which class I play.

When I play sniper, I try as hard as I can to be at the front lines pushing ahead with the team. I hate sniper vs. sniper battles and I think they're counterproductive more often than not, so if possible I try to position myself where I can snipe people attacking our front lines but still out of view of enemy snipers. I also try to take out engineers and their buildings as much as possible. For example, on Well (CP) when attacking the 4th point, a common place for the defense to set up a sentry is on the 3rd floor facing the CP. It's a good spot since it's really hard to take down with most classes. I found that a sniper crouching at the corner between the forward foyer and CP can take out the engineer at his sentry, and it's easy to take down the SG from there. I know that's a long-winded example, but it wouldn't be possible if I didn't stay forward with my team. Of course, it also gets me killed a lot and I feel silly when trying to combat a scout or pyro up close.

My other two primary classes are soldier and demo, and I'm very aggressive with them. In fact, only recently have I actually forced myself to retreat and heal when necessary because I've been way too gung-ho in the past.

So yeah, I guess 'suicidal' would be the best description, although I am noticeably more cautious as a sniper than soldier or demo (or scout which I'll occasionally play as well).

I voted awhile back but forgot to put in my two cents. I voted myself as "Suicidal," but only because it was the closest fit out of the lot.

As a few of you will know from experience, I will stick to a good offensive or defensive player like glue when I'm playing Medic, and I usually have a good run of staying alive as long as I pay attention. Suicidal isn't really my Medic playstyle, as I'll sit behind corners if I know it's too hairy to venture out while my Heavy or whatever lays down fire from a doorway; I'd rather consider myself a "risk-taker" as a Medic, since I'm willing to dive in, but will lead a fighting retreat at the first opportunity if there are more enemies than I can hope to handle.

I tend to be very defensively minded when I play as Engi and Sniper, not usually moving too far up; this holds true most of the time, unless any of you have taken my "special" teleport in Hall of Death that I try to put up in the enemy's sentry spots unnoticed, in which case what can I say? "Risk-taker." Surprisingly, I'm not too defensive as a Spy, though, and feel that I benefit more often when I just grow a pair and run in, sapping everything I can find and taking at least one person down with me when everyone figures me out.

Every other class? Oh yeah, Suicidal to a T, especially since the Pyro Update. :D

hmmm, depending on what class i play i usually am the top three of the votes there, but my overall playstyle would have to by the stealthy kind, i can usually do that most classes, spy obviously, i like to do things like put sentries in hidden places, and i like to rocket jump to high places and fire on unsuspecting victems as soldier, 'specially on Goldrush part three as defence, that little gate-like-thing just right of the first defenders spawn, i like to hide there ^^

Since that damn PandaBear Assassin got me going on TF2 I've had a lot of catching up to do. Never having played any PC games, but playing console games since the original Atari 2600, made for a difficult transition. I have to say playing against real people instead of AI is a blast (sometimes literally). I tend to favor the Soldier and the Heavy, but the other classes offer their own unique fun and frustration. I got TF2 with the Orange Box right before the last price drop. (damn it) I have no trouble offering myself up as a target if I know someone else can open things up with a sacrifice on my part. I go down swinging when I can, and I'm sure everyone that has killed me in close quarters has had to be thinking, "what the hell is this guy doing?". The class acheivements are fun, because I get a lot of practice trying to go after every Doctor or Pyro looking for a better weapon, but usually end up dead at the hands of the ones that already have em.
So, I guess I'm more suicidal and occasionally careful. But, I think the more you play the more you realize when it's time to go crazy and when it's time to wait for kills to come to you. If I had the time to really get the experience, I'm sure I could provide a better challenge. Still though, the game is so much fun and you just never know what is going to happen. Will I get my ass handed to me, or will I finally take out that player that has owned me? Nothing is more satisfying than a revenge kill on a better player. How about accidentally hitting a cloaked spy with a rocket, or, taking out a Sentry, Dispenser and the Engineer that built em.
The games great strength is that it allows every player to go with their own style of play without taking any of the fun out of it. I may hate the Sniper that I can't ever seem to get to, but I'm only mad because they are that good and I'm not (yet). It makes me realize that the only player I need to try to be better than is myself. As the game evolves through different levels, different players and new acheivements we all get a little better.

Lots depends on what class I'm playing, usually medic or soldier. When I'm a soldier i'm very suicidal. I figure either i'll die and respawn to try to get em back or I'll take them all down and look for some more. Often times i catch myself outrunning medics or not waiting for support, sometimes it even pays off with things like solo caps. Not much D here, almost all O.

As medic its a little bit different. I'd call myself suicidal/support. I don't rush in there all willy nilly normally, I choose my times. If the cap is open I'll go for it or if its a one-on-one I'll give it a go. Where my suicidal side comes in is when I'm healing. I'll follow whoever I'm healing into the heaviest shit if they lead me, especially when I'm healing our crazy soldiers on SF. I also will run across battlefields and crossfire to get to a player yelling medic or heal a guy on the front line. I'm also not a medic that runs when the guy I'm healing drops. When that happens, its Gun/Saw time :)

Not sure if they are the best ways to play, but I seem to do pretty fair using these styles.

Definitely stealthy. I love to sneak from behind and above and circle while flaming them. I was so happy when I snuck up behind shango and did the fireball taunt to kill him. Made me fall in love with the game again. Also area defense to protect against spamming rockets with the compressed air.

yeah I love that compressed air, just spent half a goldrush round defending that sentry on the last cap in map 2. even if you're not in front of the rocket, you can it them from underneath, so if you see a rocket qhizzing by towards some helpless engi nest... give it a whirl, pisses soldiers off to no end, and after you've reflected 2 or 3 your team usually takes notice and goes after the spammer, or he gives up
