Miss Wigglesworth, this is kind of an off topic question though it is related to bugs. When I squish some bugs, either by stepping on them or swatting them, what is that slime that comes out of them? Sometimes when you squish a catapillar its green, or other bugs its other colors. Is that bug "blood" or something? Exactly what is that stuff? I'm actually being serious, I've always wondered what that liquidy stuff is, hehe.

Haha oh my what a question. Basically, there are a few things inside an insect. You're probably getting a ton of hemolymph, which is as you guessed, insect "blood". It should be fairly clear and in larger quantities if you squish a soft bodied larva of some sort.

The other main component of adult insects is going to be the fat body. It's the equivalent of a human liver. It's white, for the record.

Finally, the digestive system has stuff to contribute. I'm sure a lot of yellow comes from the Malphigian tubules. They're like our kidneys. Anything in the gut (foregut, midgut or hindgut) will obviously rupture and the colour of whatever their diet is will be present (green in catapillars, red in blood feeding insects etc). Any frass left in the hindgut might be visible...

Oh wait, any mature insect that lays a lot of large eggs might have ovaries that, after they are smashed, may mimic the fat body.

I'm sure that's more than you wanted to know but there's your answer.
