View Full Version : What version did you first start playing Team Fortress

I have often wondered how long people have been TF'ing. I played in the Quake years, stopped, and returned with TF2. After voting, consider replying to this post with your all-time favorite map and what version of TF you are referring to.

My personal favorite was the Canalzone map in QTF. My second favorite was 2fort4 in QTF, which actually was a 4 team map of 2 fort configured in a cross pattern. Even the bridge was a cross as I recall. My recollection of the team colors was Red vs. Blue vs. Yellow vs. Green.

A few players were very surprised to hear about 2fort4 in-game, so I thought I would share.

I was a HUGE fan of TFC the half-life mod. Man, I spent like 6 months not doing much else but playing that. My favorite map was flagrun...it's a CTF map but instead of one flag for each team you started with one in your room, one in the opponents, and two neutral flags that you could get at certain times. You had to get all four back to your area to score. The battles were epic.

I love it when the classic maps get remade, but hated that Rock2 didn't turn out so well. I hope Avanti goes better. I think the premise of Rock2 threw everybody off. That and I get the feeling CP goes over much better than CTF here. I played a version of epicenter that was pretty good but it seemed to be missing some of the magic. I kinda miss everyone having grenades. I think those were a big factor in the classic maps.

I also played my share of turkeyburgers. Don't know why but I loved that map.

I played TFC for a couple years competitively. I'm pretty sure it was the first fps I ever played online. I quit a little before teleporters were introduced.

I am from the Quakeworld Tf days. I remember clan play on canalzone...one of my favorites! Played for Dogs of War. Slash12, who is on this forum somewhere, was on that team with me.

What was the name of the map that had the open area inside the base...hug cavern like, with a walkway all the way around it. Seperated in the middle? High sides...man that was a good and hard map.

Does FPS banana have old maps and descriptions / pictures?

TFC I believe, although its not the same as I remember it, so prolly quakeworld.

I think I remember what you're talking about, but not the name. IIRC it was a sniper's paradise.

Here's a maplist I found with strategy guides from Planet Half-Life:

Mohican, I think those maps were from TFC.

The one I am talking about had some steps going up for the entrance...very dark map as well. This is going to bother me. We had clan matches on that map.

Remember 2fort4 with 4 team? Liked that one.

Whoops, yep you're right those are from TFC. Sorry, I'm not doing too well today.

Not sure I remember one with steps, or the 4 team 2fort4. I don't know how different Quake based was from HL based, but I remember reading some documentation on the scout that I was trying that had some ability that didn't exist in TFC.

I keep reading references to detpacks for the demo, I don't remember that either. I quit playing before teleporters were apparently introduced.

I've stepped into a Fortress Forever server and had no idea what was going on. You ever go back to play the old versions? I forgot how primitive the Pyro's flame looked...

I missed a lot of the good games because I was too busy playing guitar. I barely played consoles either, just a few select cuts. I was out shortly after the release of the Quake and started playing again about 2 years ago. TF2 is absolutely great though.

What was the other mod?

Not sure what you're referring to, but if you mean Fortress Forever the explanation is best left to wikipedia. I think the goal is a source version of TFC - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortress_Forever.

My first FPS was Castle Wolfenstein 3D, which was awesome because I had loved Escape from Castle Wolfenstein on the C64 (except the load times - ya'll have no idea). I remember having a 286 trying to run CW3D and how much faster it was on my roommate's 386. A common theme with me and FPSs has been not quite having adequate hardware to run them smoothly.

I was in RoC which took in about half the 404 guys...iS 5v5 had 4 TDA guys....and I played a couple matches against PF I think.

Can't honestly say I ever played TFC :(

First multiplayer game was Diku StrikeNet (a MUD). My brother and I (still in high school) would drive 30 minutes away to a local university, several times a week, and use their computer lab in the library since home Internet access was still in it's infancy.

Anyone remember Meridian59? Kinda lame, but revolutionary in that it was the first graphic MMORPG. I didn't play it much, though, and never really did much multiplayer gaming until CS:S first came out.

Oh man that brings back some memories...I forgot they were called Apogee. I played Commander Keen some, but was more into Coaster and Stunts at the time. I think X-Wing was pretty big by then too. I bought my first soundblaster specifically for CW3D. I think Eclyps must have been about 6 years old then.

Did you get into any of the sierra quest games?

I never did get into MUDing, but I had a lot of friends that did. I know it consumed a lot of their time.

I actually graduated high school 3 years prior (1993) to the shareware release of quake (1996)... Since I was 4 at release and was 1 at HS gradumacation, I am considered genius in most circles...

You actually may be right; kids start computing earlier and earlier as time passes. What is next, the womb computer? Synapse interfaces to the nucleus of the cells as they split? Ok, I took it too far.

Det packs where great best part of a demo before the map ened you would set a det pack in your own spawn to go off in say 30 secs map ends other team now in your respawn doors are locked and boom... now sticky's replace the det pack

yeah i found FF it is a 3rd party mod that goes back to the old skins and game play it is ok but i found it boring i like the new stuff

Whew! I thought you had a few years on my but never did the math. Don't know why it matters...

First concert (if you don't count Freddy Fender that I was brought to as a kid) was Metallica with The Cult opening. ...and Justice for All tour. It was ok, but as my first concert I didn't have anything to compare it to.

I caught the GNR/Soundgarden show in Biloxi. It was excellent - GNR actually wasn't wasted and put on a solid performance with no attitude or mayhem. Soundgarden did kind of suck though. I didn't think Chris Cornell could sing well live.

Favorite concerts were probably some recent ones, but they were special because they were sentimental - didn't catch these guys in their prime and always wanted to see them. Morrissey was excellent, and I caught the Pixies twice when they came through a few years ago. Both put on excellent shows.

I am a noob in the world of TF, for I started with TF2.
TFC looks funny, to say the least, after playing TF2.
However, 'nades in TF2 sounds marvelous.

Now that I think of it, the only other game I recall playing that was squad combat based was Conkers': Live and Reloaded, which I only liked for the N64 remake, not the multi-player portion.
AND BF2:MC.

TF-wise, I started with QWTF and played almost exclusively on the [M]egadeath server(s). I think I played TFC for a week or two, but I really didn't like the Half-Life engine and I uninstalled soon thereafter. I also played Q3F for a couple of months, but it wasn't as big as I had hoped so I moved on to something else. The rest is (recent) history!

I'm old compared to along of you youngins (34) but it is good to see that I'm not the only elder around. If anyone wants to play QWTF 2fort4 lemme know, I'll set ya up. It is a shame that the medic on tf2 doesnt continue to make you sick like it did in qwtf, maybe they will at least get the pyro his flaming rocket, the demo his detpack, or one of my personal favorite, the pointy things the scout could drop so it would hurt people following him down the spiral :D

Good old Caltrops, how I loathed them. Although they had there use back in the day, the last thing TF2 needs is another weapon to throw on the ground to stop an advance. I have nightmares of sparkly glowing spiked balls just lying in the hallway, begging me to come just a little closer.

I actually started back in the Doom days and advanced through all the variations up to TF1. That was always my favorite. After that, MMORPGs took over, and other than a few weeks here or there with some shooters, I stayed away until recently and the only thing that drew me back was the nostalgia of TF2. Now I'm hooked all over again. Much to my wifes dismay.

Oh well, as long as I can find Otis (most kills) and avoid Sharnhorst(most deaths) I think I'll be fine.

Yeah, it's not so much that I'm playing on the computer, but because I'm not playing EQ2 with her. She asks me 3-4 times a week "Are you going to log in? XXX was asking for you" knowing that she just wants me to log in so just can get some help doing something.

Wow there are so few TFC lovers here. I was a hardcore TFC player throughout 1998-2002, and my obsession with the game was what originally drove my friends and I to start playing TF2. Haven't had the fortune to play QTF however.

For anyone who hasn't played, TFC was a true orgy of grenades and just an insane "barrage of bullets" (see below video). So much that the game just turned a bit out of control for me, and so I sucked at pretty much all the classes.

Here's an entertaining TFC video for both the old and new (guaranteed entertainment, not a pointless music video with random frag action):

Started with TFC, by far the largest thing I missed was being able to remote detonate dispensers. Place one where you know a spy would have to go through, and the second you get that message saying an enemy is using your dispenser, bam and they're dead. One guilty pleasure was det packing spawns in dustbowl, it was hilarious seeing a whole team die because nobody had the sense to get a scout and just defuse them. I hope when TF2 does the class update for demomen, they bring back the detpack!

I had played TF in both quake and the TFC half life mod one. Never really got into it, only played them maybe 10 or so different times? But when TF2 came out it seemed like they did everything right, so I finally got hooked and quite happy I did.

But the one I'm proud of is CS. I started playing CS before Beta 1.0, I remember playing when it was like a beta 0.2 or something along those lines. Over 10 years ago my memory doesnt serve me perfectly, but all my friends would go to a computer shop and play all night until a parent came to pick us all up at like 3 am. we knew the owners so they let us lock up, and sometimes their son came and played with us.:sign0101:

I started with TFC in 2000 or so. Played in a clan [CD] for a few years and also did match predictions for TFL's AvD league one summer. Made a few maps I never released (now doing ones for TF2 and FF) and loved it. Anyone remember the Sillyzone?

I remember I Got Half-Life back in like 98-99........Played that for a while offline ( i was still a HUGE quake 2 player then) until I decided to try TFC. I remember when you could trail someone back into spawn and shoot up the inside of respawn & kill people too, until the autogun came down from the ceiling to kill you!!! Anyone remember the dead spy on the respawn door that locked the door shut, so noone could get out .......man soo many memories (killing people with the soldiers rocket from shooting through the floor, pyros with fire rockets)ALMOST makes me want to fire it up and see if i can still play:fighting0083:

The autogun still exsists, on maps like CP Avanti. An oldie but a goodie.

TF2 - Orange Box, a couple of months ago when PandaBear and Cpt Morgan couldn't STFU about the game. My first PC game ever, trust me, I know it shows.

Hey guys, first time posting in these forums. I was a huge q1 fan back in the day and played original qTF non-stop when I found out about quakespy. I first saw it on T.E.N. (some multiplayer service that you had to pay $10 a month for I think) when one of my buddies showed it to me. Then I got pretty addicted to q1 rocket arena. 2fort was my favorite map by far (2fort4 and 2fort5). Never really played TFC, I always thought qTF was better. I love the execution on TF2 though, tons of fun to play. I do miss the medic and scout conc jump though :(
