Anyone know the best set up? I play on 2Fort and for the last month or so my ping has been all over the place, ranging from 50-60 to 200-250. What are your guys' cmd_rates etc? I'll try any settings to bring down this ping.
Thanks,
Thug

It could just be temporary server lag. On good days I get less than 40 ping and I live in Missouri. Once in a while I get 150+ though, just gotta wait it out.

1. What speed is your connection? (up and down)
2. What is your average FPS? (cl_showfps 2 or net_graph 3)
3. Are you getting Loss and/or Choke? (net_graph 3)
4. What are your current settings for:
- cl_cmdrate
- cl_updaterate
- rate
- cl_interp_ratio

1. What speed is your connection? (up and down) 4-6 k/s, 2-4 k/s
2. What is your average FPS? (cl_showfps 2 or net_graph 3) - 55-65
3. Are you getting Loss and/or Choke? (net_graph 3) - No loss, choke between 0 and 20, was all over the place
4. What are your current settings for:
- cl_cmdrate - 30
- cl_updaterate - 30 (server restricts to 20)
- rate - 10000
- cl_interp_ratio - 2
Thanks

I'm certainly no guru, but I think the minimum server rates are just too much for a 56k modem.

Hm, seems I've mucked something up, I'm not on a 56k line, I'm on DSL Fiber Optic. I'm beginning to suspect my provider, because before a certain time of day, I have no problem. It seems that from about 6:00 pm to 2:00 am I do have a much higher ping that usual.
Here are the real speeds:
Upload: 485 Kbps
Download: 1456 Kbps
EDIT: Thank you to Zappa for helping me out on this.

Yea, sounds like an isp problem. I would call them and tell them you are unhappy with the load on your line during prime time hours....Most providers will do their best to accommodate you.
Make sure you don't have any spyware/viruses.
Your server rates are a little low, but shouldn't cause fluctuations like that. The max cmdrate and updaterate for the 2fort server is 66. The max rate is 20000.
I would try:
cl_cmdrate 60
cl_updaterate 60
rate 20000
(This really depends on your specifics though, so mess around with it)
From what I have been seeing there have been at least one backbone router (or a group of routers) in the Chicago region that has been shitting its/their pants from time to time. Because of its/their location this would be affecting most of our pings.
I suspect that many routers around the US are experiencing growing pains from the onslaught of FiOS in many areas. In the coming months I would expect these problems to be taken care of, but the problem may get worse before it gets better.

Yea, I'll have to call my provider this weekend. Thanks for the help, I'll definitely be trying your suggestions.
