So after about 9 hours of screwing around with my lack of connection, I am back on the net!

I came back from being out on Saturday to discover my PC didn't want to connect to the net anymore. I figured it was probably a Comcast outage, so I just went to bed. I got up on Sunday and power-cycled the router and turned on my machine. No dice. I troubeshot the setup as much as I could (I used to do it for a job back in the day), but still nothing.

Fine, it wants to be a pain, I will call Comcast. Comcast walks me through their two ideas and they come up empty.

Next, I try hooking up my PS3 and see if that works... sure enough it works fine.

I call Comcast again to inform them of this thinking they might have some idea, but to no avail.

Next I call Microsoft and run them out of ideas (at their level 2 tech level). Frustrated, they say they will get back to me with more info. I told them not to bother if it will take more than a couple hours because I can format my machine in that much time.

Format. Tried using XP instead of Vista. Still no dice. Starting to get pretty mad (almost to the point of punching the machine). Frustrated, I call my buddy and ask him if he has any thoughts. He brings up using the USB connection to the modem and checking that. Having forgot that was an option (who uses that?), I decide to try it.

XP can't find drivers for the USB connection and I threw away the disk long ago.

Format and install Vista. Vista can't find drivers for it either so I go to bed resolving to download drivers on to a thumbdrive at work on Monday.

Download the drivers on Monday and go home (bringing my work laptop with me). Try using the USB connection and it works...damnit (hardware problem baby!)

Try using the ethernet on my work machine and that works fine. I know know that the ethernet ports on my motherboard are shot.

I called ASUS to RMA it back to find out it will take them 10 business days to get it back (F THAT!). I then decide to go buy a PCI networking card to see if I can circumvent the issue... B I N G O!

I now have Internet again and am in the process of reinstalling everything (almost done aside from windows updates). Soon....soon you shall all fear me once more.

Moral of the story....shit happens.

I don't really use PSN. I just ran the browser to check if it worked.

As for knowing something is up when the PS3 worked, I didn't want to rule out software too quickly. I would rather format than buy new hardware.

I would of bet $100 on a corrupted bios image. I have the same issue, reflashed and resolved it. ASUS board as well, but since then I have got the EVGA board because ASUS really fked up their latest 780i board. I will not ever buy one again.
