View Full Version : The Official Stompfest 2008 Review Thread
Some of you are still there... heh.
Well, I've got to give HUGE credit to Palit on this one. They really helped to throw a great party. They Palit guys were very fun and entertaining, and we really owe a lot of the enjoyment to them.
Great GREAT prizes.
Though, I did have to trash a pair of socks....
Thanks for the new mousepad, Code. Great replacement for my 6-year old Indygamers one. I've thrashed it.
Snack Bar crew was great, very smooth, and entertained a good deal themselves! Thanks a bunch to you guys/gals.
As far as 'cons' go... I can't really come up with anything off the top of my head. All around great LAN, thanks so much to Palit, the SF Crew, and all those that helped along the way.

Pros:
Tons of Video Cards
Shoe Toss = Chaotic Fun/Pain
Free
PSP Hacking =D (<3 Oni)
Food really really cheap
Cons:
Tournaments slightly disorganized (Software or human error not sure)
Not enough Tournament games (COD4, TF2, C&C3, CSS were it basically)
Could have used some Activision sponsor-with-copies-of-games love
People who won the tournaments were already running Quad-SLI on better cards xD or were people who had previously won cards
No Mobo/Processor to win xD
Shoes full of Sand, ruined pair of socks
Otherwise I had a blast, wish I could have gone home with some swag besides the water bottle/cup, really needed one of those cards xD but eh oh well, was fun while it lasted =p the fact I was kicking that much ass in COD4 with 16 FPS was awesome.
Thank you SF Staff and Palit for putting on a great lan =p

Had a great time at another good Stompfest. Palit deserves great props for footing the bill and for providing some great video cards!! Wish I had won one (or just got a T-shirt) but oh well :)
Pro's
Palit sponsorship!
Great, cheap food. Excellent services at the food counter.
No power issues at all.
Nice to see old friends and make new ones.
CodeZero! Pew-Pew!!
Cons
Only one I can think of right now is having the COD4 tourney as the first one. Seems like a lot of people left as soon as COD4 was finished up. Not a big deal really, but having the most popular game played out the second day will keep more folks around. Still, this is very minor and hardly worth mentioning.
I'm looking forward to the next event. Thanks Brad and crew for putting on another quality event!

P.S.. IU Lan is next weekend. if you haven't had enough yet, check out www.iugaming.com !

<sf> FTW!!
What a great time as usual. Stompfest proves again why it's one of the best and longest running LANs around. Snack bar was great as usual and we had endless supplies of pizza and plenty of Bawls. Did wonder where IG's cases of Bawles for biggest clan was though ;)
The House of THRASH did pretty well, with Shane getting an upgrade in mousepads to one of the new Steelseries Qck.
Hunter aka "McLovin" won the shoe toss, having both of his shoes come squirting out of the pile while he was running around it, then managing to find Palit_Guy under the center table after running all around the upper stage.
His prizes were a Danger Den Torture Tower, Danger Den watercooling kit (which he gave to Killxswitch, a co-worker of mine and watercooling mentor) and a Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB, which he traded to Trexil for an XBox 360, something he's always wanted.
I won a DangerDen WaterCooling kit via the ticket draw, which is cool since I just built new rig for <sf>
Also won one of the Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB cards in the CoD4 S&D tourney and was the first to 49 in the finals of the CoD4 DM tourney when I got mowed by Haverchuck twice as he took the great win getting 50 kills and winning the AWESOME Palit 9800GX2 video card! Soooo close :D
Probably the most fun I've had at a LAN since the CPL. Nothing like being almost forty and still pwnin up the kids like I have since DooM
and for whoever it was who asked while I was in earshot, yes, Runwithit and I are the ones from the vCoD TeamDFi CAL-I team.

this was my first lan ever....
and i was so impressed so many good things going mainly the cost.. FREE.. that was awsome and im so thankful it makes it hard to say any cons... but i had so much fun and want to thank everyone who put time into the event.. my only question is... CAN WE DO THIS NEXT MONTH!?
Pros
food stand prices were awesome i had a drink all night and pizza for like 5 bucks
the setup was nice
the connection never went out
CONS
NO VENT? WTF
needs to be a better way to organize tornys and more tournrys... we dont have to win G cards every time but we need more stuff todo t-shirts and your picture taken is prize enough... after the tornys it was hard for me to just sit there and pub... BUT HEY THE EVENT WAS AWSOME so im not bitching im very thankful
Yeah, it was my Girlfriend's first real Stompfest, too. She does much better at COD4 with a low ping... her DSL at home doesn't do her justice.
I feel the same way though, I've never wanted to have another LAN so soon after than I do now. Looks like I'll be throwing a basement-lan next weekend or so, heh.
Did anyone have Rock Band or Guitar Hero out? I thought I read about it somewhere, but I didn't see/hear it at Stompfest. Oh well.
(I had HUGE problems with getting TF2 to work, Steam kept saying "The servers are too busy to handle your request", which is crap since the game was 100% downloaded.)
(ALSO - I saw many people playing World of Warcraft - I'm quite positive it was mentioned beforehand that this wasn't allowed)
ALSO ALSO - Some people didn't virus-scan before they left home. I ran into at least 2 different trojans that I had to spend time removing, and my friend saw three on different computers. Come on guys, don't be that guy at the lan.
I guess those will be the only "cons" I append to my original post.
sloppy
03-30-2008, 10:05 PM
Price of Gas - $80
Price of food and drinks - $30
Listening to Nuno and Briz talk shit at lan - Priceless
So pretty much the lan was awesome. The only real issues was the tournaments (needed more organization and more participation). Palit gave out some amazing prizes. I have to say the shoe toss was pretty fun, but I can't wear those socks anymore =(. I will definatley becoming back next year or whenever you have one :D
Thanks to everyone who made this possible!!!!!

(ALSO - I saw many people playing World of Warcraft - I'm quite positive it was mentioned beforehand that this wasn't allowed)
It wasn't but they opened some of the ports up later on I guess. I saw one guy who NEVER logged out of wow, all he did was grind mobs or something. Cmon people, dont come to the lan and take up valuable space to grind when you can just do it at home
Anyways my own list of pros and cons
Pros
Me... er wait a second
Cheap drinks
Excellent environment
Free t-shirts
Variety of games to play
Shoe toss
Cons
Rather disorganized tournament system, the rules for some games were changed part way through, for example, the COD4 DM tourney, the pam4 mod was used until final round in which it was turned off and the people who had level 55 profiles dominated the people who just installed the game
No ventrilo access
No exotic dancers
Eclyps (Just kidding!)
Overall, It was a great time, and I for one cannot wait for the next one.

epic lan was ridiculously epic. not really a single con about it, except for the workgroup stopped working sometime during the night and we didn't get around the problem till the morning when genius matt fixed us all up.
And I'm sooooooo sorry to the guys at my table (jj sky, type-r, krazy etc) that I had to leave early and take the switch. I was planning on staying all the way to the end for cleanup and then some but came morning I felt like I was dying and had to go home in a rush. how long did it take for you guys to get working again? Again I'm real real sorry
anyway it was really nice playing with everybody!

So first Stompfest for me, and after this weekend, definitely not the last.
Had a complete blast, from seeing all the Palit guys again, to playing CoD4 for the first time on PC it was a blast. Loved meeting different people too, seems anyone I met out around the smoking area was willing to bullshit about whatever. Look forward to the next one and I'm sure I'll see some of you around on the SF servers, gonna have to start playin here. :)

P.S Huge thanks again to Palit, hell of a LAN.

Hoorah, Gentlemen! I do give thanks for your showing up at the event named above. My joy knows no bounds because the electricity remained stable. I understand that there were a small number of mishaps, but I certainly do apologize to the members of the Palit team. I, too, appreciate those of you that remained at the event to assist in the removal of equipment and refuse.
In a short while, I will upload various images and photographs to the internet for your viewing enjoyment, and gee-golly do I have a surprise for you: A moving picture will be sent to YouTube!
Considering the tournaments, there happened to be minor inconveniences but I do believe that it remained to entertain and stay enjoyable to those that participated. Unfortunately our staff that administrates such tournaments is comprised of only three men, but we certainly will strive to increase these numbers for future events.
My heart goes out to those of you that received items in result of winning a video game, or competing in a competition of any sort. I will give everyone a hotlink to click in order to electronically send a message to Palit, I will search for it soon!
(I would TOTALLY love to have a position on the SF crew of doing this full-time)

Yeah you SUCK for that!! Jk it was really no problem at all, our eyes were burning and we needed a break from our comps. Thanks for helping getting a replacement.
About the LAN. VERY fun and a VERY good time. I want to thank Dave and Palit for sponsoring this LAN(thanks for the incite on the vid cards, was interesting stuff), and StompFest for throwing it. It was one hell of a time, and I'd like to participate in more, I'd even help if needed. <3 Thank you!!

The Stompfest LAN was amazing. My team and I were so excited about this event. Even though Krazy already said it, I have to thank Palit and all the other sponsors that made this possible and gave out prizes like they were candy. Also a big thanks to the SF crew for setting this up, organizing the tournaments, and having TREMENDOUS persistence persuading us to join the UT3 server lol.
I drove down from Michigan with Shadizzy and Struja. It was the longest 4 hours of our lives lol. I couldn't even bring my own computer to the lan because my processor + gfx card are reallyyy shiitty and my case has a broken cover, 2-3 massive dents from baggage handlers at an airport, and it's missing a wheel hahaha *sigh* I was forced to use my friend's computer.
Playing COD with a decent computer and no lag is amazing. I was immediately hooked. We entered the tournament for the heck of it and got our asses handed to us but it was fun as hell ^_^ At some point, Krazy had to run over to my table and inform me that "Heyy Pete... yeah.. theres a bombsite B on this map go defuse the bomb" lol.
Somehow i won 3 cards... from CS:S, TF2, and Rock Paper Scissors.. It was fukin ridiculous. I was able to hook up all my buddies. I replaced my friend's crappy gfx card when I won the RPS event because he lent me his really nice comp and it was a nice gesture on his behalf. Without his comp I wouldve never won any event. I gave the TF2 one to a RL friend of mine who didn't win a card = / and I kept the one from CS:S because it was overclocked *drool*. Shadizzy kept callin me Stompfest Santa the entire way back *sigh*
The only CON I can find is that there was ONE toilet seat and the night before, shadizzy. struja, and I went to this really shady Steak and Shake and yeah... they should change the name of the place from Steak and Shake to Stomach Ache =X
Once again, thanks for the wonderful experience. The CSE team was able to get some really nice cards and mousepads which we really needed and my friends from Michigan got hooked up as well. It was fun getting acquainted with the people I've been playing with for a couple months now and I hope I see all of them and MORE in the next event. Feel free to add me as a steam friend or just say hey whatsup Pete/Asphyxia. Much <3 Much <3

Great prizes, awesome turn out. I think I only seen a few empty seats when the LAN was in it's heat. Everything went well for the most part.
Tournies are still the major weak point. But this seems to be the problem year after year.
8 round counter-strike? I know you guys hate CStrike with a passion. But run a fair tournament for the people that play it with passion. I realize you were behind horrendously for the failed cod4 effort (failed for being on time that is), but it ruins the integrity of the game, especially the fact that it's 15 rounds 5 v 5, and has been that way in every league I have played since my cstrike conception in mid 1.3 era. And hearing you guys snicker and joke around about the CS Tourney, and it's players for over an hour was kind of lame too. this being the admins on stage.
I understand shit happens with configs and mods.. but your best effort is to pull players off to the side, and ask for a rule set, and a list of maps. this was done at the last winter wonderland and iG as i think, as well as iucgc (i know i helped with configs more than once), and all the teams loved that. The map selection still seems to be out of order or pointless.. Honestly, I felt dustbowl would have made for an epic final map. or something way more familiar.
And you need to tell us the rules. We weren't sure what the play limit was on TF2. We were told 2 20 minute halves, but but each half time was 30 minutes, and switched after 2. Same for counter-strike, and CoD4. Round limit is what I'd call a necessity. Maybe Next time Justmotha*^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$in Nate can manage some round again, he did very well last stompfest.
also felt prize distro was kind of weak. case and point in above post.
other than the tournament, and the order the games were played.. it was all good. The free pizza and 2 free bawls was awesome, along with getting a cup. Got a shirt that fits for a change.. makes the chubbies feel awesome. Got to see alot of regular fools again, that you only get to see at these events normally. 8/10... Normally it'd be way worse, cause the tournies were managed poorly, but I don't go much for the tournies any more. altho next time I think i'll prep a little better. But my computer wasn't fixed till day of the LAN.

i was getting over food poisoning, so it was nice to have bottled water there.
The cod4 tourney started out pretty bad like. Then the second time they started it, it went fine. Thats all I played as far as tourneys.
Palit was the shit.
uhh... I missed standing up at the stage and getting random stuff thrown out into the audience. That part was always great. But that didn't happen that much this time.
Can't wait for the next one!

Cons:
No Mobo/Processor to win xD
I take absolute responsibility for this one. Since I'm not writing for AVault any longer and there hasn't been a major LAN that I've been associated with in nearly two years, my wealth of contacts has completely faded. I sent maybe 250 e-mails and got about 5 responses. =[
Sorry all for dropping the ball on that one. Thankfully Palit really threw down some AMAZING prizes though.

and having TREMENDOUS persistence persuading us to join the UT3 server lol.
*cough* UT99 *cough*
Sorry if that got on anyone's nerves... I'm not much for CoD/CS and the TF2 servers were always sparse when I popped into Steam. So I fell back on UT99/2k4/III nearly the entire time. It's worth mentioning that my persistence paid off though, we had nearly 2 solid hours of a maxed out full server inbetween DM maps and CTF-Face. That absolutely MADE my day.
LazyAce
03-31-2008, 12:23 PM
Thinking of that, I'd probably say another downfall was more games weren't announced. UT99 would have been badass, but you called that during tournies. You know how much I wanted to tell my team to get a ringer? LOL. sigh. q3, ut99/2k4,

Ok Guys Tournaments:
As far as COD4 is concerned, we had issues with the Stompfest PAM Config, which actually was supposed to allow things such as voice as well as other setting changes...However during tournaments, the servers were ignoring the SF Ruleset all together, (based on TWL)...After switching pam to twl, everything went pretty smooth as far as that is concerned. Also we had some delays due to Palit table going out, and the people on the table were on 3 teams that were live in 3 seperate servers :)...
As far as DM, the PAM Was not letting us really change the winlimit for COD4 DM either and it was stuck at a low value..Therefore we decided for the final round to give you guys a choice on the matter. I also got inflicted with Strep throat the weekend before so doing heavy testing on PAM was kind of an issue at the time....I do apologize to anyone that had issues with that.
As far as CSS, We had downloaded the configs straight from CAL and I will acknowledge there was a glitch in the lo3cal.cfg file causing the startmoney to drop to 800...Since we had already started we went with it...Still do not understand why round 1 hadnt had that issue...All in all more testing will be done next time...
As far as TF2, I think it went pretty smoothly, minus the tournament changes in the middle specified by CAL Config...We did adhear to CAL config on that tournament though so I'm sorry if the rule changes in the middle bothered you, but as far as we can tell CAL Rules change based on map.
LazyAce
03-31-2008, 02:59 PM
the rules didn't bother.. It's the fact that nobody told us. We didn't know to play till 3, or play till time was up. nobody specified what so ever. we assumed.
My problem with CSS was the config itself.
Your best bet would be to get teams opinion at least on what should be ran. Instead of saying "We changed the round limit, don't complain cause we don't care". which is pretty much exactly what I heard at the beginning of CS.

first large scale LAN for me.
great people, huge turnout, great prizes.
i came with mojo games. .M.
CoD4 organization was horrible with the time. ABSOLUTELY NO PLANNING OF THE OFFICIAL TOURNEMENTS. I was really in to win, and every time i asked about anything with the tournements (nothing personal), Rebo just told me it didnt matter or he didnt know. Such as Map lineup/selection?!?!?! I still dont see how that dosent matter. None of the gamers got a choice in the map selection, espicially when it came to running the first match of free-for-all on OVERGROWN?!?! Also having heli/strikes/uav enabled on free-for-all turns it into a campfest, not a matter of skill or stomping.
Once the 5v5 Cod4 was going it was really looking good. We made it to the final round, out of some 16 teams i believe.... and went up against the people that win every year from the sounds of it. BUT WE GOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. not even an announcement.
yet 10 year olds who's dad owns IG gets multiple video cards and water cooled cases. btw i heard from the persons table that dave was under that the father(no name mentioning from fear of drama) pointed out to the kid where he was. note he was in when dave ran in telling everyone not to tell.
but hey, thats not what im dissapointed about, shit happens. Im extremely frustrated with the fact that most of the prizes were given out randomly to people who may not have even stayed, or participated in anything. yet runner ups in the biggest tourenys got nothing, not even mentioned. This was a let down.
After the 5v5, me and Mojo were going to wait for the free-for-all which was again extremely delayed by like 4 hours or so. Well we really wanted to start a cash tourney or challenges for fun. I asked probably about 6 times for Rebo to announce the tourneys for me. Everytime he said it would be fine and he would in a few min. but everytime it was about 30min before id go up and ask again.
well finally after the rigged shoe toss, Rebo had been telling me he would announce our challenge and get some teams in as soon as dave was done.
he announced it in about 5 seconds over the mic that
"some kid is talking shit up here and wants to take you on, and challengers? $5 or somthin"
i decided to just yell out that my team wanted to arrange some matches 2v2 or 3v3 for cod4, and we were willing to put up $5 per person because the other tourney was over and we wanted practice, and some sort of gain out of the event.
Probably about 2 mins after Rebo announced the Free-for-all to start. About 5 mins earlier b4 the cash tourney was announced he had told both me and my team that the FFA would be pushed to Tomorrow. We were still up at the announcers desk arranging the thing when he did it. Then everyone was like wtf?!, we asked if he was going to wait for it, and why he suddenly moved it up, he simply responded "we have nothing to do with you, were not waiting on you guys"
i had to tell some 10 guys we had gotten to start a cash tourney, which probably would have kept many teams there for the entire event, that we couldnt do it, because they decided to move up the FFA last minute. Which was the tourney everyone left after. I know the stompfest people had nothing to do with the cash tourney thing, but they did next to nothing for the teams that came out for more than pubbing all night, and there is a post that their would be open mic. which there wasnt. i got 5 seconds of bs and a bad look. After that my whole team left, again we all made it to the final round of the poorly arranged FFA and got nothing out of some 100 people. So i was stuck alone for the rest of the event somewhat frustrated, and nothing but pubs, after the FFA everything ended till the next day at like 9, by then only some 30 guys were left.
Frustrated.
Feel ripped off. (free entry was nice)
Hope to see better next time.
Michigan next week for Bigshotgaming. Only second LAN, not sure what to expect, i will relay ideas and or event setup.
this is not a rant. just a wake up. i still love stompfest, and mean to hard feelings to anyone of the staff. i just know that the planning/organization could have gone better.
if im not banned for this post i will def. be there next time.
if anyone would like to discuss, i would love to talk.

i agree with you here.. i kept going into the pubs and seeing if people wanted to get something going besides pubbing... a mic would have been nice to just walk up to and be like hey this is what id like to start anyone interested come see me... but all in all for a free lan it was awsome

04-01-2008, 04:55 AM
deflamb, I agree with alot of your points.
Stompfest has always been bad (except the last one in 06), about asking gamers WHAT THEY WANT IN A TOURNAMENT. They run what they think is convenient, and end up pissing off 150+ people in the process. It's always been a closed system on the stage, and I don't foresee this changing unless we light a fire under Davey's/other tourney admins ass. JustNate, you keep rocking. homies for life.
Another thing. Ventrilo. Nuff said. You want to ban it from the internet.. that's fine, don't need to be wasting bandwidth on stuff like vent servers and world of warcraft.. err.. yea. but you can let us run vent servers on the network. even came prepared with an old version of vent installed to get past the 8 man limit.
distro distro distro. very weak on this.. I can't elaborate on this enough.
open mic used to be the beauty of stompfest. This year I have to admit, I was disapointed.
Network problems seemed to get fix quick.. along with power issues. Unless if you're palit, and stretch 10 guys onto 1 row of tables, and have 34 inch LCD's, with like 8 water cooled rigs haha.. Yea.. I have to admit, that was kinda funny. I've never been on the nasty end of an outage, so I can't complain on this yet.
/rant?

actually.. you're not supposed to talk at all.. if they wanted to be more strict, they'd hover over teams playing, and watch your screen fade to black.

My row was in a bit of a rush to get our TS server up... but dear lord that didn't help our CSS game. We hadn't played in a good two years, some of us not at all.
Yeah, we won the first round, lost the following eleven.

All of this negative posting makes me yearn for another IndySmash event. I used to have so much fun at the big events around town, but logistically speaking no one can ever appreciate the fact that we're not employed by Angel Munoz and we don't do this for a living. The LAN scene used to be about gaming, laughing, and having some fun. Now it's all "for serious" with people gunning for new products and abandoning some of the older games because they have to practice, practice, practice... to win before their tournament.
I really miss the days of loading up Quake II/III, UT99, Jedi Knight II, etc just to frag each other and laugh our asses off for hours.
P.S. Could some of you be a little more respectful when you're talking about the title sponsor that paid for your seat at this event and gave away as many amazing prizes as they did.

I just want to defend your misconception of IndyGamers here. The "dad who owns IG" doesn't own IG. He like many of us, are just members of a large online community. IndyGamers doesn't compete regularly or go to lans purely to win prizes. IG just happens to have some very good players that throw teams together at events like this. I'm sorry if you felt that there was any conceived notion of impropriety on any tournaments or prizes.
Please contact Stompfest or the sponsors directly if you feel you were slighted, rather than implicating our community first. We pride ourselves on being a community based on solid principals and equality for all.
lan wisdom
Yeah, it's getting a bit harsh. This sort of topic is created to show appreciation to the staff and sponsors and those that made it happen, not argue about the minute details that happened to "piss you off".
Was I mad to find I got a Trojan from the LAN? Sure, but I'm not blaming the staff. That's user-error.
These sorts of topics can be used somewhat for improvement for future LAN's, but at some point it's just abrasive and unappreciative.
If you want to REALLY read too far into every single Stompfest LAN and catagorize them by which was best, what was wrong with all of them, and why... do that on your desktop in a text file and don't share it....
... But if you want to appreciate a FREE LAN and thank those that worked VERY HARD to make it happen, do that here.

You got beat by a team with a 30 year old and 40 year old who pubs TDM...
yet 10 year olds who's dad owns IG gets multiple video cards and water cooled cases.
First of all, I don't "own" IG, I'm just another member. I won my video card in the CoD4 S&D and had my ticket randomly drawn for a watercooling kit.
btw i heard from the persons table that dave was under that the father(no name mentioning from fear of drama) pointed out to the kid where he was. note he was in when dave ran in telling everyone not to tell.
UH...wrong. I was outside with everyone else when it start. People where yelling to check under tables when I came in, so I told McLovin to come from the stage to start looking. I was actually sending him in the wrong direction when he saw Dave laying under the center isle.
Im extremely frustrated with the fact that most of the prizes were given out randomly to people who may not have even stayed, or participated in anything. yet runner ups in the biggest tourenys got nothing, not even mentioned. This was a let down.
You wanted to be mentioned and get prizes for being the last ones to lose? Complaining about prizes is one sure way to make sure sponsors DON'T send prizes anymore... This is not a competition LAN, which is why you don't see GotFrag coverage on it. It's the anti-CAL, anti-CEVO LAN for what gaming is supposed to be about... FUN.
well finally after the rigged shoe toss
What, did we help him find his shoes first too? Nope, he did that on his own and won some cool prizes on his 13th birthday... but thanks for taking the time to sh!t on what was probably the funnest day in his life because you got p!ssed off after his 40 year old Dad's team beat you in the finals...
The sad thing is, I used to be the whiney little CAL competitor, b!tching after every <sf> about something with the CS tournaments. I hope you learn as I did, as I've been LAN'ing now for ten years or so, that events like these are for fun, to get together with a couple hundred other people who just like to play games.

I never seem to get enough gaming in, end up hanging out with friends and meeting new people, but this year was a nice mix of both.
Great job!

Guys, we leave these threads open because the coments are valuable to us so we can work out our problems for the next lan. As long as I am staff at the next LAN, I can assure you things will be handled differently. I will be sure to apply many of the suggestions you've all made.

All around my LAN experience was pretty good. Almost everything turned out as I hoped it would. I got a whole weekend dedicated to playing games with many friends I havent seen for some time... Given that thanks to PALIT for the seat! Also I would loveto thank SteelSeries, TechSkills and Danger Den as well as any other sponsors who participated in this event. Also would like to thank Brizad the staff as well. Here's to more SF's!
Pros:
-Network was great. 5 ping all the time! (our switch seemed to be the ony thing going down)
-staff was helpful
-snackbar was killer as always. 3 pizza 2 bawls w00t!
-Side events like shoetoss are always a +. 'Cept for the loss of my socks.
-lan stayed full for some time
-swag tosses lemme walk away with some mosepads and tshits
Cons:
-Tournies were a bit rough with all the restarts and rules.
-Open mic?
-I know no speakers, but tons of ppl wanted that gh3. :P
-blah I can think of a lil more but it's not important
Thanks again folks.

+1 to Eclyps and Thrash for being good people that obviously don't suck at life.
EXTRA EXTRA +1 to CodeZero for Managing the games, keeping a cool head and doing a good job of moving people(like myself) that were standing around when he called for team Captains.
big f'ing -1 to anyone here bitching about prizes. Prizes are like overclocking and getting laid(nearly impossible for some LANers).... nothing is guaranteed. I know some people would not be bitching if they won something so chill. I didn't win anything and I think that I had more fun than anyone.
Why would anyone be mad about a nice young kid who won a lot of cool stuff? I think it is better that the younger guys win stuff because we older people have a lot more money and it's like Christmas to the kids if they win.
+1 to the palit guy for being a ninja.
+1 to me for being the best security that you didn't even know you had.

Pros: The place was great, People were friendly and all of the guys we played with were good hearted. Also the bad ass DoD agianst the SF crew at 4 am was probably the best thing that was there... sorry if we woke you it was intense and pretty funny watching Blooddrenched shoot a gerande up the tower and then right down the ladder hole and killed himself lol.
Cons: Winning a KICK IN THE NUTS! Having sand in my shoes, Seeing some guys car get stolen, and me playing on a crappy laptop and couldnt run much.

I don't think I've EVARRR laughed so hard as I did with you all (Rufiok incl.) playing HL2DM and yelling Pew Pew Pew across the mic. I did it too when I was trying to shoot down a Helicopter in COD4 with a pistol.
word.
I had a good time playing the games I went to play but I do believe this was my last stompfest. One particular instance where I was just disappointed was when there were about 2 sets of 4 people looking for another player for the counter strike tournament, and because the tournament runners couldn't be patient to get more teams in(A few of the teams got byes anyway), the tournament started and players couldn't play. They quickly started up the tourney, and only 2 of the 4 servers they had up were occupied. If it was really that big of a deal that we got started and got it all running, why weren't the other two servers being used? I do believe I know the answer to this question. I went up to talk to code for some reason or another only to find that the people running this tournament are just leeching porn. A really sad affair. I might have enjoyed myself more if I was as hammered as the Palit dudes, but really I could have just played at home and gotten the same thrills and maybe a comfy bed to sleep in.
I predicted that LANs would die shortly after World of Warcraft, however you guys have been making an honest effort to keep the scene alive, and I, and many other gamers appreciate that; however, like any business you should take a more personal approach to your customers. I'm sure you aren't trying to be the next CPL, based upon your attitudes towards running tournaments on games you don't play. I tried to announce I was willing to give away my mouse to the person who can beat me in half life 2 deathmatch. Rebo asked me my name 3 separate times, and upon announcement he still messed it up, I thought that was lame. I'd be embarassed by Palit too, I mean cool yall had prizes and shit but I was amazed at the stuff that was being said over that microphone. What a positive influence for those kids that were there, right?
Blah, I had fun, it just could have been better(In my opinion). It was a nice experience for me, and nice seeing the same faces i've seen since I first started going to stompfest when I was 15 years old or something, but in 4 years i've matured and I don't think i'll be wasting my time and/or money on another.

Speaking as one of the people running the tournaments I don't think you saw any of us leeching porn. You may have seen someone else but you did not see tournament staff doign that during a tournament. You are just running your mouth. You either didn't know who tourney staff was or made an ass-umption.
After tourneys were running behind schedule do you really think we should wait and delay everything even longer for someone who is short a man or two to get their act together? Any possible way you could maybe do that before signups closed? Usually there were a group of people up there and volunteers looking to be on a team. They didn't seem to have much difficulty.

Someone mentioned that the winners of the high end cards were already running some brings up a great point.
There is no way for us to know who has what in their PC's without asking for the information before the event. That can be easily done but we cannot possibly limit their prizes based on their PC's because it would be unfair and quickly result in sandbagging to get better prizes.
We gave away a ton of cards... more than I have seen at any of the events we have done in the past and I hope McLovin can use his and not require a huge payout to be able to install it.
Other than our random give aways for hardware, if you can figure out a way for people to get prizes without excluding those that have nice PC specs already we are all ears!
Contests like the shoe toss, oldest coin and longest distance driven are good starts but when it comes down to paydirt the big prizes go to the winners of tournaments which is often the higher performing PC's.
We always welcome ideas on our site at www.teampalit.com or even at our new LAN event website www.palitlan.com so stop in and spit out some ideas! Who knows, maybe those ideas will translate to prizes for you =D

i dont think it was the fact of people that had uber rigs already got cards, they deserved them, its just none of the runner ups or 3rd place prizes were given out. only if you beat the best of the best did you have a chance at winning anything, then people getting more stuff than people who made it to final round getting all kinds of cards/cases/coolers is really frustrating.

I have to agree with Rufio 100% on this. This wont be my last stompfest, cause I know and respect way too many people there to just not go. But seriously, something needs done about these tournaments.
I don't even go for the tournaments anymore. I didn't practice a lick before this one, just went with some friends that I figured would enjoy a good time.. and that we did for the most part.
and if you're already behind, why does it matter if you delay another 10 minutes. It's not like you're going to catch up magically and be on schedule. Most the gamers are patient, even the counter-strike players, more-so than you guys may think.
You wonder why stompfest had a shakey LAN awhile back. you take half the reason why people go, and do what you will, instead of using the standard.
And I agree with code..

Exactly!
I didn't know what table he was under, but others did and pointed him towards Dave, I was bringing him back to the 2nd row of tables. Again, what would I care at this point, he'd already won it by getting his shoes on first.
What I had a problem with was being accused of being in the room when Dave came in, then cheated by showing him where he was.

I just wish there was second place and third place prizes, so the guys who are already running quad-core quad-SLI aren't the only ones walking away with parts..
I really needed one of those video cards and fought tooth and nail for them >< would've been nice to know I wouldn't be shut out instantly by the winning team and walk away with nothing =/
As much as I hate to admit it, your computer plays a HUGE role in how well you do in some games, not guaranteed victory, but it gives you an edge to be running with no lag, no frame rate skipping, every movement is seen perfectly on your 24" LCD monitor clear as day xD
something needs done about these tournaments.
This is a bit of a calling out you want to bitch about the lan help about you step up or shut up we are always looking for more people to help so step up offer and we will see what happends. We try our hardest to make things go smoothly when it comes to tourneys. and never seemed to make it work right........ and to thoose say we should how about you dont drag your feet and step up and make your self known dont be lazy and except us to wait. and also we might finaly have a tourney staff that is the same for more then one event and that is what will help but we are always looking for more so if you think youve got it then step up or shut up! and sure thats a call out to you lazyace you always bitch so why not shut up and come help maybe you will get some respect for your ideals.....
I would have to agree second place prizes are a decent ideal we use to have meadels?sp? back in the day.
And next time i am going to try and work somthing out for the GH3/RB people it's mainly a power issue not so much the sound issue ...... so next time i am going to try and plan out an extra spot for that and sence they re did the koc they now have tv's in the front so i might be able to work something out there ............thing is people always complain about the noise when stuff like that is played so maybe we will have it durring certin times only or somthing...
about the open mic sometimes people are busy when you ask if so ask someone else real quick or just ask if you can annnounce it we usaly dont care.and the schulde is usaly very very hetic so we are sry if we dont seem to concernd with what you are doing lol we are usaly trying to get somthing going ask us durring down time when we arnt running around like crazy
but this was an awesome event thank to palit for fotting the bill and still giving away prizes.... maybe i can get dave .... to send me one of thoose 8800 gts for filling up my comptuer with porn that one year.... haha good times...

this thread is taking some nasty turns = /
A lot of bashing going on about admins downloadin porn or not giving a damn, people cheating, the winners having ridiculous systems.
I think the SF crew did the best they could given the circumstances cuz a lot of shit went wrong behind the scenes and they had to fix it and go with the flow. The servers went down, the power got *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$ed up at different tables, especially ones that had people that were competing on 3 different servers. A Lot of shit went down but shit happens. We saw that they were having problems execing the proper lo3.cfg but we understood that they couldn't do much about it so we said *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$ it, lets play with 800 instead of 16,000. W/e. Both teams are getting 800 so what does it matter. Same thing with the TF2 Final. Both teams had to deal with 10 minute rounds so w/e. No favoritism was involved and all the tournaments were fair. Can improvements be made? Sure. Thats why this thread was made, and some other people have already started making configs and preparing for the next LAN so kudos to them.
So if you guys wanna bash each other, make a new thread and go at it so I wont have to sift through the posts and try to find constructive criticisms about how to make the LAN even better as opposed to reading about people accusing admins of downloading goat porn or 13 yr old kids cheating. That kid had no idea where the guy was lol. Shadizzy and I kept telling him he was behind a locked door and it was amusing watching him try to break the door down. AHhhh we are evil... = /
and PS. you don't need a quad-core quad-SLI to win a Rock Paper Scissor competition lol but yeah second place prizes would be cool but I don't think they had enough prizes to give to 5+5+6= close to 16 second place gamers and thats just for COD4/CS:S/TF2.
Some criticisms from me:
-Balanced Halves for each team instead of flipping a coin to see who starts out with the better side.
-Allowing ventrilo servers at the expense of stuff like WoW/e.t.c?? If possible? I don't know what that would entail bandwidth-wise.
-Proper .cfgs (although i saw that is being taken care of)
-Having the map rotations in advance (also being taken care of i believe)
Other than that it was an amazing LAN. Probably the best I've been to. If you guys have been at better ones then WOW.

Like I've always said, tournaments is not what LAN parties are about. It's about gaming and having fun. And everyone I've talked to has said that this was a fun event. I doubt if we were so strict on tournaments that it would ever be fun. I give props to the excellent job SF team has done. I think we have a good idea from the comments where the work would need to be done... but frankly, I would be happy to say bye bye to tournies all together and find new ways for the giveaways and just keep the true gamers, the true ppl that make LAN parties fun happy by throwing up servers and pushing players to join.
As for Ventrilo Local mode, for some reason their server requires a connection to the outside world even on a LAN. And ventrilo was not on my list of ports to research and allow through the INet that was provided. But that's ok, I gave teamspeak to everyone who wanted it. In fact.. whoever was the last to borrow my Thumb drive ended up ruining it. Very sad because it was a gift and not just any normal cheap thumb drive.
Please don't complain about prizes. Every LAN I goto, I turn down prizes. I'd rather have a trophy like the ones we used to give away or even one like PsychoWard! (where is Scalywag anyways?)

For the people that came to Stompfest and had a good time I thank you for attending. I had so much fun meeting with as many people as I could. I can’t wait to sponsor it again. For the people that worked so hard to set everything up and tear everything down, well, I’m glad it wasn’t me. There but for the grace of you all go we. For the senior staff that make the decisions on things like venue, how to choose which tournaments to run, how to run them and where to order pizza you have my pledge to continue to support your efforts in any way I can. All of you together make Stompfest my favorite LAN.
Palit chose to sponsor Stompfest because they represent the very best aspects of LAN gaming. They get things done with an amazing combination of detailed planning and flying by the seat of their pants. They are NOT some kind of professional tourney holders that cater to pro gamers that don’t give a crap about the LAN and are there strictly to compete.
Stompfest is about staying up all night and goofing off and meeting old friends and making new friends and playing games and eating and silly contests and all the things that make a LAN party a LAN party. Palit supports that endeavor and we want to support the people that go to those types of events. We want to support them with free admission and free pizza. We want to support tourneys that run long, have strange brackets and the rules change sporadically as everyone tries to figure out the best way to do it.
This type of event really gives you a chance to find out about the people around you. Do they get in the forums and go nuts because they didn’t like the way things went down and had a lousy time while they were there because nothing seemed to suit them or do they take a step back and realize they just went to a fantastic event, met a bunch of people that are into the same things they are and managed to have a good time even though the whole thing wasn’t perfect?
Personally, I think you should leave this thread open and let people say whatever they want. I’m not afraid of Internet muscles and I don’t think anyone with any sense will have any problem seeing through that sort of thing. I certainly don’t.

Now that is one of the best improvement suggestions I've heard yet. I think that's a great idea!

Brad, If it comes down to that, then do it. I know it's a hassle trying to manage 200 gamers into tournies.. But it's one of those things that I feel it's either ran with the gamers in mind, or not at all.. I would honestly rather just have games put up and random prizes announced. Or open up mics for scrims etc. Like I said before, I'm not there for the tourney's anymore... 2 years ago, that was a different story.. But stompfest has lined me with disappointment in that area, so I tend to not look for them there anymore.. plus the time and prep you go thru to get ready for the shit just seems pointless the older I get, I just enjoy performing on a high level and make people bitch, or bitch myself lol.
my point is, you advertise tournaments. you advertised massive prizes for them. if you want to go with the "they're may be a tournament" approach, you really can't disappoint either way.. either you have it, and people enjoy it.. or you don't lol.
been going to this LAN for too many years to give up on it.. I've seen it go thru a couple bad cycles, but now it seems to be picking up, and thats what makes it great. I know I am bitching alot on this thread, but it's only because it's like years of pent up aggression coming out lol.
I'd love to see another 400 man like it was back at the atrium.. my first massive LAN.. actually, I think it's still my biggest LAN.
and Oni, maybe I will step up.. It can be done, Nate did a really good job last year doing a few of them.. so I know it's not impossible like you guys make it sound..
and give some teams some acknowledgment... 1st-3rd used to get announced. now it seems like if you aren't first, you're last.. heh..

I would actually prefer all the prizes are given out for random contests and the tournaments give trophies (Those Psychoward ones used to be soooo awesome xD wtf Scalliwag!)
The tournaments should be more about bragging rights and defending champions, not shiny new parts, thats more for random swag =D

All in all great times were had. I got to see a bunch of people that I had met from Showdown, Stompfest people and the Team Palit guys who attended that LAN under another moniker. Anyone who games with me knows that I'm a middle of the pack player at best so not using tourneys for prize distro is fine imo. Random and silly methods are much better for that. Getting to see the shoe toss again was priceless. By far the best contest. Ever. (hats off to palit_guy for that i believe?) Less emphasis on tourneys and just having fun should be a focus for the next event I think. the most fun I've had at our private LAN parties is just goofing off.

Tournaments rock! I would like to help next time though. So yes. I can't wait for the next stompfest, fo sho.
I thank everyone that was willing to to in front of the camera, thank you. I was good to see many of you again as a lot of people it has been some time. Seems like people are getting older and having kids and playing games less. Come on games are more important. ha. I am totally kidding. Anyone that knows me knows that is a complete joke.
The only gaming that I played was the Orange map in Day Of Defeat source at about 4:30AM or whenever that was. Thank you guys for that match. I never thought that a "fake" map like an orange one could be so addictive, got addicted to it some time ago. That was a blast to be able to get that out and play some. There were some people getting in and out of the match but I believe it came down to a three on three match. Rebo, Davy, and me against three guys with soemthing like INDY as the first part of the handle.
I hear reuqests about the IndySmash seemingly now and again. I have thought about the thought of doing a one timer sometime. hhmm...

and btw LazyAce Justnate wasnt the only person running tournaments that year by any means...I was very much responsible for that smooth event as he was.

then why does 1 guy make an event go that much smoother? He seemed to be the front runner asking people what maps, telling people what the configs and setups were... I don't see how 1 person can make that much of a difference.. I mean shit, it's just nate. heh. .
I agree with Code with the simple games like Q3 and UT99. im not bitchin about anything i didnt really play any games but Duke nukem 3d and Ut99. i had fun no matter wat as long as i have a network hook up.lol;):D. i miss the BF1942 and MOHAA days. And am i the only one that heard the guy SAY that he would not be inside the building and he would be out side and no one would have to run inside the build to tag/find him and run around the computers during the Shoe String throw? wtf talk about a lie and a joke for a poss winner. but i may have miss heard him. i dont get that. but still was fun. And we do need JustNate helpin out with the other stuff with the servers and stuff. he does know wats up. but Good job SF staff<sf> and Palit Staff.

I'm just happy I got to play games with my friends and holler across the room at people who knifed me !! :)
I didn't even get a t-shirt and I can care less. The people I was hanging with just wanted to game and have fun. In my mind, tourney's are always 2nd when it comes to the big picture. I've been going to Lan's and hosting them since 1999 and it's always been that way for me. If I win something, cool - if not, f*ck it, I still got to party with my friends.

Short of getting my car stolen, I had a blast. This was one of the best events I have ever been to. I will always remember this one. We had a ton of TeamPalit members show up to the even which was fantastic in my book.
We gave more cards away at this lan that I could even imagine. Who ever won them congrats to you.
The one thing that I really noticed was the lack of CS. THAT WAS TOTAL COOL!!!! Be gone with you, and welcome in COD4!!!!!
I wish it started on Friday night, but the way the lan worked out in the end was great. I bet it works better with people that is running the event with their normal jobs. That's cool and understandable. I hope there is another won in the fall sometime, or this time next year.
One hell of a drive for this Oklahoma man, but I'll do it every time.
Thanks you palit for fotting the bill cant say that enough

This was my first large LAN and it was everything I hoped it would be.
Palit was great for everything they did.
The prizes are cool, but I think just announcing and getting a pic on stage or something would something huge for some people. I will still come again if there is no prizes, and we had to pay.
Ill will drive down from chicago (breeze of a drive after you get into indiana) ANYTIME and I really hope there is another SF really soon.
THanks to everyone
