I haven't looked at the new intel processors yet but the Quad Q6600 and either a raptor with 150gb or 1-2 320-500 gb 7200 rpm in raid 0 (No idea how to raid).

A whole new one actually... back in the day, I spent a lot more time investigating hardware, reading the reviews, etc. I am open to suggestions on my next configuration if anyone is interested in sharing their opinion. Please no pre-built stuff (the last prebuilt I bought had a turbo button on the front that upped it from 2 to 4 mHz)

Since I'm currently running a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen2 laptop (with GeForce Go 6800 Ultra, 2GHz Centrino, 1GB RAM, and a still world-class 17" 1920x1200 monitor) - which I bought for my Iraq deployment in 2005/2006 so I could still play games :) I'd have to build a new one.
On a $2,000 budget (if I could afford to do it now), here's what I would build:
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=3538409&WishListTitle=Tim%27s+Future+PC
Note that the $2k budget includes Vista64, a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so if you already have those, it's more like a $1500 PC.
I know conventional gamer wisdom is to stick with a dual-core with a higher clock speed, but read the news about ray-tracing. DirectX 11 is going to support it - it's supposed to be out by the end of the year, and it's big on multi-core.
i think im just gunna get a new pc, or new macbook pro havent decided yet

What do ppl think of the config Timmah put up? I wasn't kidding when I said I was taking suggestions (Sorry Timmah! if that wasn't your intention) I have a KVM, so the monitor, keyboard, mouse are all out... and I get software through a purchase program. Opinions on the core system components?

yuck g5 = laser mouse.
get an mx518. Its the same thing as a g5 except it doesnt have the weights, but its optical which is better than laser.
I dunno what I would get because all my computer hardware except my keyboard, mouse and moniter are 1 level lower than the best (8600 GT, 4600+ duo amd, 2 gb ram) So i'd prolly update my video card first.
Timmah!
04-07-2008, 09:39 AM
What's wrong with laser mice? From what I understand, the only differences vs optical is that they're more precise (2000dpi vs 400-800dpi), more accurate, and are more tolerant of the surface you're using. Of course, more $, too - but they're so common now that the price difference is minor.

I started playing with a 3G laser mouse last night and enjoyed it.
http://www.acousticpc.com/razor_lachesis_mouse_blue_led.html
My only problem is the extra buttons on the mouse I keep hitting which do strange things as I havent programmed the thing yet.
So far, I think the 3G is playing better for me as long as I don't start clicking the extra buttons, but it comes down to player preference and style.

my next one is a full build as well. id like to stay with amd/ati.. but both are just outclassed right now by the intel/green team offerings. either way..it will be xp pro and not vista.. too many of my programs have not..and probably will not be patched for vista.. id have to buy all new versions.. meh

next for my rig is 2 more gigs of ram and a raptor drive.
also.. laser mice forever... I have a g5/g15 setup and I absolutely love it.

I'm still contemplating on getting either an e6750 or a e6600. I plan on majoring in Computer Science when I go to college but i'm not sure if the quad would help. Comp will end up being school work/gaming.

Disregard the last paragraph in my first post about ray-tracing and DirectX 11. It turns out the article I read was a day-early April fools joke. Stick with Dual-core for the time being if gaming performance is your biggest concern. But if you do any kind of encoding, or video editing, etc...

As for my next system, I think It's time for a laptop.

Couldn't get the mic and headphone jacks to work, not usb 2.0, cheap filmsy feel but it is better than a regular keyboard but not worth the cash . I would have gone for a G15. But I do like the backlit colors.
Its not really a POS but I just didn't like the feeling of it. You however might like it like two of my freinds love theirs .

I will check it out when tomorrow. If it sux, then G15 it is.
BTW - Anyone seen this? I might buy it just to mess with it, although I am liking the new 4000 dpi Mouse:

Hey if they have one with a 2.0 USB I think it might be different . The one I had was not eve 2.0 and the jacks weren't plated. You might have ordered a different better one. Give it a shot . I take back my previous statement.

So far:
You are correct on the sound: works if you don't mind everyone saying, "(Insert Username Here), your mic is too low." (It produces sound, but at a volume so low it is painful to try and hear apparently) I just routed back to the machine, I wasnt looking for more sound cable routing anyways.
The USB is 2.0 and Goldplated. It has good weight. My biggest problem thus far is getting used to a new keyboard as the layout sometimes has me fat fingering. (Shrugs) My second biggest problem is that my wife wants one just to make it pink in the family room despite her computer now being media center and having wireless (of course) kb and mouse.
The colors are cool and the blue matches the Razor mouse identically. I was able to drag and drop and change keys in seconds, alt-tabbing between TF2 and the KB Control panel. Since I was coming from conventional KB's (over 20 years of them), this is a great improvement. I do not doubt from folks in-game, that the G15 is as good or better.

Well there are some applications that stress the crap out of a duo core so a quad would be best. Question is if I will be introduced to those programs and how often I would use them.

I'm looking forward to intels new Nehalem chips which should be out either Q4 of this year or early next year. Basically Intel is taking a hint from AMD's Athlon architecture and axing the northbridge and putting a on-die memory controller on their Penryn processors. Should be fantastic. I'm contemplating getting one of the first stepping released and phase change cooling it and overclocking it like a mutha.

Short term, Belkn n52te. Been using the old n52 for two years and can't live with out it.
Long term would be a new case, MOBO, RAM and CPU. After that I will officially not be playing on a Dell any more. I have upgraded mine as much as I can and will keep my 8800GT Superclocked, Hard Drives and Antec NeoHe550w. For the new parts I am looking at

has been discontinued and a few brick and mortar retailers have put these puppies on the clearance rack. So I picked one up today for $50.00. Down from $80.00 or more at normal retail. If you need a great keyboard on the cheap just stop down at your local electronics depot and grab yourself one.

Well, the Intel X38 has to go. The G90 series cards from Nvidia have issues overclocking with non-Nvidia boards. In many cases people get it to work just fine but it is an issue I have seen a lot of people have, I am even one of them. My 8800GT has issues with crashing when I overclock. I will set custom clock speeds and even run Nvidia's stress test for 10 minutes watching the temps to make sure everything it ok. Then I load 3dMark06 and it crashes 10 seconds in.
