funny how the govt watches the middle class get *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$ed over. They care only about themselves, and thier banks. Just today Chase and some other company made huge measures to save a bank, why not the middle class?

YAY HISTORY TIME!:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_tender#In_the_United_States
In 1798, Vice President Thomas Jefferson wrote that the federal government has no power “of making paper money or anything else a legal tender,” and he advocated a constitutional amendment to enforce this principle by denying the federal government the power to borrow.[5]

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tender
Legal tender:
-something tendered or offered, esp. money, as in payment.
-in Commerce. an offer made in writing by one party to another to execute certain work, supply certain commodities, etc., at a given cost; bid.
-in Law. an offer, as of money or goods, in payment or satisfaction of a debt or other obligation.

http://www.afn.org/~govern/why.html
"On March 18, 1968, Congress passed "An Act to Eliminate the reserve requirements for Federal Reserve Notes and for United States Notes and Treasury Notes of 1890", Public Law 90-269, 82 Stat. 50. This Act was designed to remove the remaining reserve requirements on circulating notes and obligations. $1.3 billion in gold was "pledged" against "gold certificates" and held as reserves against circulating notes and obligations. Under this Act the gold certificates would be withdrawn and retired, then the gold would be considered as "free gold" and paid out to foreign interests at $35 per ounce.

Ok, so what that explained: US ceated "legal tender"(paper money) during the civil war because there wasn't enough reserves, then (took)"bought" the gold reserves back from their owners, as well as actual gold standing as "money".

Now there are only silver and gold notes at coin shops and ebay. none are accepted in circulation. Why? To have the actual thing that money once was replaced with a piece of paper for the public to have, a "guarantee" of time for a service.

And you wonder why gold's so high now?

Here explains what will happen to our currency:

the us doesn't control the world, and therefore it doesn't HAVE to be a conspiracy that the dollar is failing.

the european union and its memberstates have incredibly high GDP growth rates and the collective PPP GDP of the EU is distancing the US by the year.

combine this with the subprime bubble, a bankrupting war, and the increased use of the Euro in foreign reserves, and you may find an answer

Things I would say about the US economy:
1. We are on the verge of a recession. The only reason we are not "in" one yet is because of the formal definition. Given the quarter returns for Q1 and Q2 of '08, I would say they will have to admit this.

2. Investing in gold/other precious metals or other currencies and markets is not a bad idea at the moment. The US population will freak out when it is declared we are officially in a recession, and things will likely get worse than they normally would.

3. The movie Idiocracy is becoming true slowly each day. Unless you enjoy paying for the inadequacies of your fellow Americans, I would suggest being wary of any more governmentally sponsored programs (my favorite example is the idea of Universal Healthcare)

Indeed. Communism and UHC(UhealthCare) have a lot in common, and are really the same thing: good on paper, bad in application.
I think the world will become like "Idiocracy" and "Minority Report" mixed together, along with some of "A Scanner Darkly".
We need some "Fight Club" and "V for Vendetta" mixed together for some help against this g.o.v. that is growing...

The main reason the dollar is losing value and the economy is on the fritz is because of these numbers I read in the ArmyTimes this early german afternoon:

"5 Years in Iraq
The War by the Numbers"

"5.95 billion gallons of jet fuel, gasoline, and diesel fuel used by US Forces...."
"141.6 million barrels of oil; The price of a barrel has risen from 36.96$ in fiscal year 2003, the first year of the war, to 92.87$ in fiscal 2007."

This is just the begining, there is A LOT of money being poured into this "War on terrorism" in Iraq, that it's becoming hurtful to our economy, we're spending money out the ass, on things like, bullets, vehicles, armor (IMPORTANT!), bombs, rockets, missiles, 4.8$ million for orders of spare and replacement parts for vehicles.. 347 million pounds of mail moved into and out of iraq, this costs alot, 113 million MRE's, 2.1million pairs of combat boots issued, 914,652 Advanced Combat Helmets (ACH) issued.. theres also BK, Monster, Red Bull, unemployment rates droppin for Iraqi's (good?), 6,200 iraqi schools repaired since 2003, About 60,000 teachers trained..

It's getting worn down and tired out and the country is just better off being ran by Iran. Sorry to say it, I'm in the Army myself, but if we pull out, Iran will most likely come in and take over. That's even a good idea, then they have to waste their time, money, and military personel to acquire Iraq, that they wont be a prodominent threat, and we can focus our personnel power to other countries, like.. partying in Germany (check! ;)) and Afghanistan.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: I care about the Euro/Dollar exchange rate more than anybody, as I am currently stationed in Germany.. I have to use Euro out in the economy, at the bars, clubs, and restaurants, shopping stores, tattoo parlors, etc.. everything I do off post takes Euro.. I don't get paid enough COLA to justify .65 euro cent on the dollar. BTW, the damn rate changes everyday, and is usually lowest (down to about .62) on or around payday.. :/

that's about the dumbest effing thing I've ever heard... If Iran controlled the oil from both of those countries, the money they'd make would allow them to buy any military equipment they want from Russia and China, and they'd roll over Kuwait and Saudi next... and we wouldn't have the fuel to retaliate because Chavez controls the oil we use from the south....

It's 3 AM so don't want to read most of what is above until I get some sleep. But from a third person perspective, why would the gov't bail out all these financial institutions that were pulling in billions and billions of dollars in revenue? Who cares if they are going out of business? Shit happens and if the company doesn't make it, too bad. Any why all these interest rate cuts? Wasn't it what *^#$*^#$*^#$*^#$ed everything up in the first place?

Yeah, having served ten years on A.D. myself, I kind of learned to look at the big picture instead of just what's shown to the masses during the news.

I'm actually dropping so pounds to go back in the Reserves or Guards as an officer (maybe Signal or M.I.) for another few years while I still can.

Where are you stationed? I was at Merrill Barracks in Nuremburg in the late 80's with the 2nd Armored Cav.

I hate watching the news, because I know there is more to the story and I hate being teased. ;)

If you don't want to join Active, go reserve. Mostly because I hate the guard. ;P
