I just got an 8800GT and installed the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 (~$25) cooler on it last weekend.
It is a passive, though massive heatpipe cooler that brought my card from around 70c at load to 50c. I'm also overclocking 15% (700mhz) at this temp. This is without a fan folks!
If anybody is looking for a cheap, quiet, and effective cooler I'm very happy with it. It's big but totally worth the scratch if you want to o/c your card and still have a quiet system. Just thought I'd share.
Install is easy. I have pics and tips just PM me.

I think I'm getting a 8800 GTS to solve that problem. I'm working on my NB heatsink right now, too lazy to trim off some of the heat sink. Getting a Thermaltake HR-05-SLI to fix that problem.

Yeah, whoever thought NBs would need active cooling or massive heatsinks 5 years ago. Go figure.

Baddog,
How is that Thermaltake copper cooler with the blue fan on noise? It just looks like it sounds like it would buzz like a hornet's nest!

Surprisingly quiet. I had orginally hooked it up to a fan-speed controller, but when I turn it up to max its still quiet. I have a OCZ RAM active cooler,
http://www.ocztechnology.com/images/products/accessories/b/XTC_Cooler_fans.jpg
and it made more noise on high...so I moved the controller over for that.
Going to get another one for the southbridge.
Oh, I use a Tuniq 120 for the CPU...and it does not push air around the RAM and CAPs.

P.S. Sometime in the next couple of days you should take about 24 hours off from getting on your computer...you know...reformat your hard drive...install a new O.S...rebuild your main gaming machine...OKAY?! :D

I still have my stock 8800gt cooler. It is very loud however I don't mind since I wear headphones :)

You didn't take all those pics did you? They are quite good.
I actually snagged an e6700 off of Frys/Outpost.com today for $85 (really) so I'll probably complete a do-over on the system when that comes in. I have an e4500 at 3.0 ghz right now so I'm not even sure how much of an improvement from the extra cache and speed I'll get out of the e6700.

Wow! What a great deal.
Take some metrics now (SisSoft or other benchmarking) and then you tell us how much of a difference it makes.
No, those pics were all scarfed off the net. But I have all except the first one, in my possession as of this evening!

I was thinking of getting the Tuniq Tower but I had already order 2 AC Freezer Pro 7s. I thought I was able to fit it on what I know figured is a micro ATX mobo. Well at least I simply broke a plastic pin, so now I have 1 good one for my new build (still in the making -_-). I'm switching from AS5 to TX-2.
Also I'm wondering if theres a good 1 PCI-E x16/2 mobo out there, since I'm never going SLI as i'm not THAT hardcore. And i'm adding a 140/120mm fan to the heatsink above which should be quieter than the copper w/ blue fan heatsink I was going for that day.
Well back to looking at the wall :p

Becareful...that wall will jump out and smack you! ;)
Many good single PCI-E x16 boards out there. Check out www.tomshardware.com and their reference system ontop of their hardware reviews. I like their testing methodology.
The "copper / blue fan" Thermaltake is EXTREMELY quiet. But the one you got should be killer with fans. I bought a 4/fan controller today to be able to fine tune the other fans. But the NB/SB fans don't need it.

Pretty lights! My Cosmos covers all that stuff up anyways so I don't bother with neat stuff like that.
The E6700 from Fry's deal fell through for many. I guess they sold out in minutes and couldn't shore up stock to cover many of their orders. L-AME!
Oh well. I guess I'll wait and get a Penryn and SLI when my 8800gt can't keep up with the new stuff.

I'm thinking of just rebuilding my whole cooling system and go water instead. I just want shiny tubes in my system . (no-homo)

You are going to need a radiator and then a fan for it. Between the pump and the fan, I have not found a water system that will be quiet enough.

i slapped a vf900 on my sapphire 3870 and temps went from:
idle 55'c load 92'c to
39'c and 67'c
...i could not be happier..

Yeah, vf900 is awesome but I was smitten w/ reviews of the S1 and I need a quiet system.
I actually first ordered a Gigabyte 8800gt w/ the vf900 pre-installed (see http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125087&Tpk=gigabyte%2b8800gt) but it wouldn't load up! This is when you couldn't find an 8800gt anywhere and I thought I'd lucked out. I RMA'd it w/ great cust service from clubit.com. Then I saw a deal on hardocp.com forums for a reference EVGA 8800gt from newegg.com for 229 shipped. I jumped on it and installed the accelero s1.
I'm running a 100mhz overclock on both the core and memory for 11,500 3dmark06. My idle temps are 46 and load is 54 (typical stock idle). All with passive cooling. I'm beyond impressed w/ this heatsink.
Too bad the reference nvidia SLI boards are shit. I'm waiting for MSI's platinum 780i board to come out then I'll probably upgrade to a 45mm processor and eventually SLI when the next range of graphics-heavy dx10 games come out. I guess I should have gone w/ a pair of 3870s on my P35 board and saved the $$$.
Its funny... a year ago I was playing on an Athlon 64 3000+ w/ a 9600xt. Valve scales their graphics sooo well I could still play HL2 and CS: Source at 1024x768 and medium settings w/o AA/AF. TF2 w/ everything maxed looks insane.

i love the hr cooler from but you are right it is massive.. i used their measure specs to see if it would fit with the optional 92mm fan..
it would block my sound card if i faced it down, and it would ALMOST hit my cpu cooler if facing up. so i went with the vf..

Results are in.
The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 brought down my card temps by over 30F across the board. I run a overclocked GT8800 and was not happy with 150F temps under load, and 120F at idle. I am running a 120mm fan running at 600rpm on top. When I shut the fan off the temps creep up 7-10F across the board, still significant results. This is an awesome passive cooler!
BTW, the install Thermalright NB and SB coolers brought down the average MB temps by over 20F! They are whisper quiet at 5000rpm.

These suckers get HOT to the touch in no-time. I mounted a temp. probe under the NB and it idles at 124F.
I also scraped off a bunch of Artic Silver thermal compound off the CPU and re-installed the Tuniq 120, but no difference there in temps.
