I have to put Patches down tomorrow. He's fourteen now, and I can't remember a time before I've had him. He's bigger than most shih tzus, and I've never met a more loving and sweet little guy. He has always been very calm, cuddly, and (somewhat) naughty, and I can't bear the thought of seeing him go, but his kidneys are failing and he has this open sore that won't heal... I don't want to drag things out and leave him in pain, so I think this is best. I've taken a million photos and videos of him the past week, and I've done nothing but play with him, and hug him, and give him all the treats and snacks that he's never supposed to have, but... all these things will never be as good as having him pad over to my bed at night, jump in, and curl up onto the pillow next to my head. He's always had a very distinctive, but definitely not unpleasant smell to him, a sort of little puppy smell that's stayed with him for all these years, and it breaks my heart to think that I'll never experience any of that again. I don't want to just have pictures, memories... I don't want petty mementos, I just want my dog back, but tomorrow I'm going to hug him for the last time ever, and without him realizing what's really happening, he'll be put to sleep and I'll just want to die.

I know it’s hard to loose a pet, I see it everyday. I am a nurse at a vet clinic. But I also see the ones that suffer because people aren't compassionate enough to realize that they are being selfish by keeping their animals alive. You are doing the right thing, no matter how much it hurts and how hard it is. When an animal is brought in to be put down, they know. Whether it is for a good reason or not they know. And I can tell by the way they look at the owners and me the ones that are hurting appreciate it, and understand. I've had to put down several of my pets and it’s always hard and I never want to get another because it’s so hard, but you'll have your memories and you wont forget how much joy a pet brings you and you will get another. The cycle will continue and another great animal will bring unspeakable joy. I don't know if this brings any consolation but I dearly and whole heartedly believe that all animals that have an impact on people go to heaven and will be waiting patiently for us to come home and see them. I hope your day is peaceful and you understand that Patches loves you and does know that you are helping him. God Bless.

wow, i read every post and now i've got tears running down my face. i feel for you man.

i lost my black lab of 15 years last november and he was the best friend i ever had and ever will have. he was deaf and had athritis in his hips and two pellets in his hips that someone shot into him. if i knew who did it i would probably kill them. i could tell that he didnt want to give up. the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak. he couldn't get up stairs and could barely get off the ground but he would still wag his tail like crazy everytime he saw me. he passed away in his sleep one night while i was at college. be grateful you got to spend time w/ patches the last night. i wish i could've done that w/ my dog, but we've got him in a nice grave by our house so i can visit him every now and then.
