I am looking at building a custom arcade setup using my server with MAME + other console emulators. For the controller I am thinking about purchasing a arcade style joystick and button kick:
Micro controller w/ PC interfaces (http://www.x-arcade.com/byoarcade.shtml)
Two joysticks with buttons (http://www.x-arcade.com/arcade_bundle.shtml)

So $80 + shipping. Additionally my roommate and I are going to design and build some kind of custom cabinet to integrate our current living room setup with proper allocated space for my server, the TV, sound system, and of coarse arcade controller bench and maybe in the future a hub to connect other console controllers. When I get this thing built I will be posting picture online to make you nerds drool.

From what I have read from reviews the joysticks and buttons from the site I was looking at are actually pretty good. I am not looking for the ultimately precise setup; I mean it's for personal use not competition. On a side note I noticed this on the x-arcade site:
New Competition-Grade Button-Design!

Redesigned X-Arcade™ buttons based on top-selling competition buttons from Happ/Suzo™

Now achieve the highest performance amongst American, European or Japanese arcade-quality switch. Performance match to Cherry™ Switches found in Happ™ Buttons/Joysticks

The engineering behind this kinda stuff is not exactly tough, the fact that the USB interface on the Happ site is $110 minimum is rather questionable.
