Hi,
I'm Ebola, I R Nub.
I want to play TF2, but am having issues.
I searched the boards to see if there's a similar thread, couldn't find one. If there is, please redirect my nubness =D
Here's the issue.
I try to boot TF2 through steam and it makes it to the "powered by Source" screen, then crashes and gives me a "Failed to create D3D Device" error and requests I go to this link:
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=772
Which I have, I've downloaded the latest non catalyst driver update from ati's website, reinstalled steam and tf2, installed all netframe and high priority window's updates and latest update from directx's website.
Here's my sys. specs.
Old comp,
DFI Lanparty II Rev B Mobo,
2x PC 3200 512 ram,
AMD 3000+ 2.1 Ghz Processor,
ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256 vid card,
Windows XP home,
Any suggestions other than "buy new computer", "jump out window", etc. Would be grand.
Thanks!

hmmm....
you were absolutely destroying me yesterday, so what'd you do between then and now?
anyways, try installing the Catalyst drivers. Why are you sticking to non-catalyst?

Oh noes,
Someone else already has this name? =( Guess I'll have to change it.
I've never played TF2 on the computer before. I played on the xbox once but wasn't thrilled.
I hate analog stix for fps'.
Anyways, Sticking to non catalyst 'cos when I installed those I got another error...
something about being unable to run MOM.implementation.

GASP!
Don't I feel stupid now... :( The guy who kept killing me was simply "Ebola"
Anyways, that doesn't sound good. I think the whole MOM issue is something with .NET and the Catalyst drivers... You wouldn't happen to have a system restore point from before the .NET install would ya?
Sorry, I can't be much help here. Maybe someone will come along with more advice. Also, try the steam forums.

Welcome to Stompfest!
Well since you already have a link to the steam troubleshoot page, I assume you already tried the -dxlevel 81 option with no luck?
Try using the -novid option too, so in the launch options for TF2 it would be
-dxlevel 81 -novid
Also make sure you're in a normal resolution, 1024x768 32 bit color, if possible.
Start>Run> dxdiag, click the display tab and run the direct3d test, make sure everything works.
I assume by non-catalyst, you mean the one that doesn't come with the catalyst control center, right?
If that doesn't work try installing an older version of the ATI drivers, or there are some other drivers you can try, I'll look them up later.

---Welcome to Stompfest!
Thank you! Can't wait for the lan =D
---Well since you already have a link to the steam troubleshoot page, I ...
--- ... -dxlevel 81 -novid
Just tried that, no luck. =(
---Also make sure you're in a normal resolution
No luck there either.
---Start>Run> dxdiag, click the display tab and run the direct3d test, make
---sure everything works.
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
No idea what these mean, I'm about to google them to see if I can find anything. Figured I'd go ahead and post them here first.
---I assume by non-catalyst, you mean the one that doesn't come with the
---catalyst control center, right?
Correct.
---If that doesn't work try installing an older version of the ATI drivers, or
---there are some other drivers you can try, I'll look them up later.
Where would I find older drivers? I'll try googling that too. =X
Thanks!

www.techpowerup.com
has a comprehensive list of nearly all modern, and some not so, ati drivers. also, do you have .net 2.0 installed CCC needs it at a minimum to run.
tpu is a good place to go for all things ati.. go to the downloads section, and make sure you show old revisions in the upper right pull down menu. my fave were the 6.7's with no ccc only the normal windows panel

Download this 7.7 driver
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1677
Uninstall your current driver and reboot your computer.
Install the downloaded driver, reboot again, and see if it works.
I picked 7.7 because a lot of people have better luck with that version, but if you'd like to try a different version here is a whole list of ATI drivers:

Hooray! 7.7 seems to have done the trick.
I played a round and the game is hella fun!
Although I'm terrible, the most I got were 3 kills in before dying. =X
Greatly appreciated! If you ever need free parking in Columbus, I'm your guy!

The trick is don't play a risky position ie;
Scout
Spy
Sniper
;
Engineers sentry guns could rack up kills but for a person like me ; I could take them down easy.
:
Soldier is the position I hate playing the most
:
Play the Demoman , learn how to use the stickys .
That is my tip to you.
Oh and don't get killed by noobs

place stickies = spam them everywhere and when you run out don't stop shooting your other grenades around corners.

acula don't be a noob ..:P
Place them all in one place so they won't look so obvious ie; the side of walls .
I'm going to play on the normal rotation server today . I haven't been there in a while .
