It maybe your refresh rate.

If it's a constant 60 FPS check V-sink. That prevents tear in your screen but also will make your FPS go no more than 60.

By the way, I get ~150-160 in TF2. During super action it drops to like 90 sometimes... never lower than that though.

yes it is a constant 60 and it doesn't move at all. its probably this

In your display properties go to your settings tab and click the Advanced button. Then there's probably a monitor tab where you can change your refresh rate.

Most newer monitors go up to around 75 hertz, some 90+, keep in mind that the refresh rate of your monitor caps your game FPS that you see.

Also you can check the back of your monitor to see the hertz its supposed to be set at, though mine says 60hz and I have it set to 70hz. This may or may not reduce the life of your monitor.

What gets me is video cards can display 150-200 FPS in a lot of high end games now, but monitors can't support it. I'm looking at a constant 60 FPS no matter if my true FPS is ~150. Boo @ huge LCD monitors. CRT monitors can still support high refresh rates, but like ditship said "reduces the life of your monitor." Monitor refresh rate FTL.

Oh and I play on 16x10 widescreen, settings max.

I don't give a shit about the life of my monitor .

leoftw

Yeah, I personally use net_graph 1 because I just think 3 is a bit much.

Gives you your fps and other jazz, w/o the actual graph.

Woot I found the problem was that in TF2 in nvidia control panel for some reason Vsync was on. I tunred it off and I'm getting 120FPS on 2fort :) this is on stock settings to . IMHO I don't notice a difference between 60 & 120 :P

You have a widescreen monitor? An easy way to check is just find the option in CS:S or TF2 that says Widescreen, you'll see 16x10.

Ok so here is what you do:

goto console (~key) type in: record name

That will start the recording of a demo with whatever you named it. Do this in game for a minute, or off line, just create a server and run around on the map. After the minute or so is up open console and type stop, that will stop the recording.

Now open console and type: timedemo name

This will run the demo as fast as it can and give you an average frames per second at the end. The great thing about this is it's always the same controlled test, and when you tweak some stuff on your computer you can really see what your gaining or loosing in fps. Way back in Quake 1 days everyone used to use a demo called "BigAss1.dem" to bench mark there fps with the timedemo command to what what they were getting against everyone else. It was a 16 player deathmatch full of all sorts of action and plenty of gibs. I should record a demo on 2fort with all of us in it and then we could all use the same demo to see what sort of fps we each get on it!

If you just want to record a demo and watch it at regular speed just type playdemo name. It will also bring up the names of all the demos in your folder after you type "playdemo" in so you can just click on the one you want.

I made a short demo of just me running around 2fort and I do the timedemo command and get about 164 fps. Once i get my dual core cpu tomorrow I can see what difference it will make.

Zappa

p.s.

cl_showfps 2 works better for showing fps while playing and doesn't save it in the config. If you want to turn it off use cl_showfps 0. the only thing wrong with that command is you can get 180fps in the sewer but get on the bridge with action and drop to 60 fps. The timedemo thing with give you an overall average.

After you record this demo make a new thread with a link to it, and put that stuff about the timedemo command.
