...and installing a new QUAD CORE SCALR right now! If all goes well, see you a couple. If it does not, well, there goes another box to the curb. Pics will be shot and blood will not be spilled!

Still in burn in, so no over clocking yet.
Net change (all other variables constant) is a net increase in FPS of 20+ fps. I run a 8800 GT and went from a 6400 Dual core 2.13 (running at 2.3) and went to the Q6600 running at stock 2.4.
Planning on running it at 3.4'ish. I need the multi-core on this machine for number crunching and chewing through data (Oracle 10g).
Me like.

I've got a B3 and can't get above 3.0 without burning up :(
still blazing fast though :)

my runs pretty good at the stock version. plus, i really need to watch the power bill. high as it is.

you mean the SLACR version correct???
thats the G0 stepping that does OC very well.
i have the Q6600 that i havent pushed very hard at all right now with 4x 1gigs of OCZ Reaper memory. i run a dangerden water cooling setup.
my mobo is a Asus P5K delux, but im not use to OCing on this board as this is my first intel CPU/mobo in many years.
when i get bored or brave, im sure ill try to fry this puppy.
let me know how you make out if you OC.
BTW, its not uncommon for this CPU to hit 3.2~3.6 on air. over 3.6 you need better cooling and luck of the draw.

Power bills...amen to that.
I just figured out how to get the sleep (S3) functionality to work on my MB. Scoring 5.9 on Vista (64 bit) processor rating...for what that is worth. Sandri will be run tonight.
Next on the agenda is getting the boot drives raided (lvl 0). That should pick up some performance is disk reads/writes.
Overall, this is one of the "bestest" Intel processors I have bought (versus given for free).

Hmm I'm surprised you saw such a huge leap in gaming since most games don't even utilize multi-core.

his game performace is most likely from the 8600 card, and not really the CPU. those were some old ass video cards he was running. ya they were SLI, but still.
you almost dont even need to load any raid drivers or anything as vista does a good job at picking it up and knowing what your doing automaticly.
now that i think of it, i dont have raid drivers installed on my system with my 4x80 gig raid 0. i just created the raid in bios and then installed vista.
im still getting pretty good performance, atleast thats what sisandra says when i ran it last.
my vista experience score is only 5.6 because of my memory?????
all other scores are 5.9

With everything else held constant, and the only changed variable being the E6400 to Q6600 change, there was a significant jump in in-game performance.
To be precise, I measured FPS in 2fort at specific locations (it changes throughout the map) on an empty server. Average increase in performance was just greater than 20 fps.
It is a known fact that most games out are not utilizing the mult-cores and I have not "pinned" any processes off yet (dedicate them, forcing the mult-core to work).
My explanation of the increase? IDK! My hypothesis is that Vista is such a hog (read: fat pig) that IT is utilizing the additional performance bandwidth. Or at least not choking things down as much.
Alternative was to purchase (for $279) the E6850 Dual Core. I just could not bypass the Quad for the Dual.
I have raid working...and you are right that it was just a bios setting to get it running. My issue is to move my current boot image from a single sata/300-500mg to raided drives. New drives are in and work fine, just having problems restoring the current boot image to the raided setup and getting it to boot up.
I use Acronis TrueImage v10...backup and restore works great, but getting the restored image on the raided drives is tricky. Looks like an issue with the master boot record going from non-raid to raid. Install Vista on the raid and all is fine. Trying to get my single drive setup restored on the new raid, not so fine.

Hmm I've been skeptical about getting a quad for my next upgrade since most games don't even use multi-core, but I think you just convinced me to buy one :P

im nto sure what version of vista your running, ( im runinng ultimate) but there is a compelte PC backup option in vista that i have to say works very very well. also to note, that might be your only option for creating a image to backup as ghost products dont work with vista.. atleast the only version that really matters and that is ghost 8. every version after that is a rip off and simply a pile of crap.
this could explain why/if you are having issues restoring a image using another program other than vista backup utility.
it has no problems creating a image, but it will fail when you try to restore it.
just hook up a external drive and create a image using the backup in vista and create your raid. within 10 mins you will be back up and running.

Hellz: Running Vista Ultimate 64
Acronis TrueImage (v10) has worked flawlessly backing my Vista partition and restoring it. Just restoring it to raided drives has been buggered. Yeah, GHOST started sucking after Norton/Symantec bought it. I'll try the complete PC backup. Good suggestion!
Vit^pr0n: Your results could vary. And I don't think any of us need you to have a better FPS, mmmmokey?

I have a SLACR go and asus maximus and can't get it stable above 3.4ghz without adding some major voltage that I'm not comfortable with but I think this has to do with Vista because prior to this I was on XP with the same processor but a different board and was able to achieve 3.6 easily on a IP35-E board. For right now 3.2 is fine for me. Here are my scores and I hope you get the same results .
FYI: I bought my Q for 170$ @ frys black friday . I sold the POS mobo it came with and it came out to 170 :)

Leoftw,
I have the same cpu cooler so I hope to get close to the same results! Thanks for the reference picture, and I'll let you know how it goes after burn in.

Damn I didn't even bother to burn mine in ; lol . TX2 Grease works great , whatever you do , don't use that crap grease the Tuniq Tower came with . The TX2 dropped my temps about 10C

its asll about the articsilver.
you dont need to burn in CPUs anymore, or i should say i have not heard of anyone needing to do that in a long time.

Arctic Silver: yes.
Burn-in, break-in, base-lining, free-basing: I use all those terms interchangeably. I just wanted to make sure everything was solid before I started tweaking.
Note: There were two (2) drug references in the paragraph above, find both and win a prize.

Is that prize a brand new burned-in quad core ? :D
