post some info to help us.

do you plan to OC ?

what parts do you have now that can be salvaged to your new rig.
monitor, KB, mouse, HD, video card, memory, PSU, DVD rom.

1200 can build you a very decent computer as long as you have parts.

i put together a quad core rig for just a tad under 1500.
that was 280 for CPU
220 for MB
180 for 4 gigs of memory
150 for case
320 for video
rest on water cooling parts, and what nots

This here is imo a very basic rig that'll get you started in the right direction. You can upgrade shit later and add on and what not. I also assume you have mouse, keyboard, monitor, network card, etc.

VIDEO CARD $299.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130306

PROCESSOR $265.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115018

MOTHERBOARD $114.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142

MEMMORY $96.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227261

HARD DRIVE $169.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136012

COMPUTER CASE $115.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133040

POWER SUPPLY $129.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002

==========================
GRAND TOTAL: $1192.94 before tax.

You can use this as a base starting area. Change things around if you want to save more money or if you don't like the look of the case. Everything here I put up might not be the best stuff ever but to the best of my knowledge is reliable and at least good quality parts. I chose ASUS mobo, Thermaltake case, OCZ RAM and Power Supply, all noted for either good parts or great customer service at an affordable price.

*edit* crap, just noticed OEM processor, you'll need to get some cooling as well. Look that up yourself!

i agree with one's post. BUT if you are lazy like me you can do what i did

step 1) Get Dell ( you get free 21 or 24" lcd widescreen)
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bddwpgj&s=bsd
$849
step 2) Replace shitty vidcard with evga 8800GT
$250

I only need the actual computer itself, I have a monitor/mouse/keyboard that I'm willing to use.

What I posted was something I slapped together in bout 20 minutes including an axcel sheet adding up prices. If the graffix card is out of stock then get a similar one. The ram I chose one of mid range qualities that is actually quite fun to O/C. E's heatsink is nice but honestly, If your not gonna O/C any heatsink will do. The air flow in that thermaltake case should be more than enough for you to keep a stock computer nice and cool with stock heatsink/fan. Change the processor from OEM to retail and it'll come with a heatsink/fan albiet it's a pretty gay heatsink/fan. Either way showtime, you have a friend that knows computers. Give him my list and play with that. Upgrade some, down grade some and I'm sure you'll be able to come up with a computer that you'll be happy with.

If i were you, I'd just upgrade your current PC like I did, however I guess it may be different in your case becuase my dad's best friend put together my comp, however I guess you have a similar scenario.

If it is possible though, you should do what I did. Simply order parts of which you need upgrades for. For example. I got a new Motherboard, Processor, 2gb of ram, video card, sound card, and dvd-rom drive.

All together that costed me $550 for the hardware. Labor costs may vary.

lol you consider that an upgrade? I'd say that's a new computer minus the case :)

lol if your going to get that many parts why not shill out a lil bit more and build urself a 2nd box. if i ever had to do a major overhaul like that upgrading so many parts at once i just build myself another box.

I didn't have enough money to shell out a bit more :P

I would have bought another box/hard drive/powersupply so i had 2 comps, however my old processor and motherboard ironically went bad becuase my dad tried to build a comp using those parts to sell.

i think upgrading part by part is retarded unless its like a better gfx card or another gig of ram or so. It's not worth it to pay money to just upgrade a tiny bit, and then a month later realize that you need to upgrade again, but you have to buy a new motherboard and such to support it.
