View Full Version : Blockbuster to favor Blu-ray high-definition discs over rival HD DVD format

Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.

The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The Associated Press.

Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the company said.

The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said. All major studios except one are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including The Walt Disney Co., releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric Co., exclusively supports HD DVD.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Paramount Pictures, which is owned by Viacom Inc., release films in both formats.

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said.

The rollout of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said.

Blockbuster's decision could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit.

"It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Group, a research company.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first three months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group.

The two formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs.

The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player.

The Blu-ray camp has been helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format.

As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba Corp., the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 (€224.5) with a rebate, down from $499 (€374.7) when it first went on sale.

Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 (€751) when it first was introduced.

not me... I have a 42" 1080p LCD and a blu-ray player with 5.1. Why would I want an upscaled DVD when I can have true 1080p HD and uncompressed audio?

i have a Sony 46" XBR2 LCD and use my PS3 to play Blu-Rays on it, looks totally amazing! The bonus with PS3 is the HDMI cable hooking right to my Sony receiver for pure digital sound. The main reason I got the PS3 was for the Blu-Ray player and it just so happens to play games too lol. The latest patch (yes the ps3 patchs itself thru wireless internet) upscales all your DVDs to 1080 which is totally sweet. You cant play HDDVDs on it though, it just wont read them. I would say the future of HDDVD is not too bright.

I'd recommend getting a separate blu ray player instead of using the ps3. I am guessing that like the ps2 it will have something to do with damaging it later on. Maybe the ps3 improved and won't do that but I won't be the one experiencing it so I don't know. :(

I've never heard of a ps3 damaging a disk. 360 on the other hand... :)

i guess some group did a study and found that after 5 hours of normal gameplay, 1 in 8 360s damaged a disk. Duno how trustworthy the study is though.

I use my ps3 as my only blu-ray/dvd player and i must say it's absolutely fantastic.

I'd love to see the source in which you found that "study". It's really funny how out of the 12 million plus that own a 360, only 1-5% at most of those people actually have defects with their system, but of course everyone hears about it because those are the only people that are complaining.

For $600, with PS3's best game out right now being a simple port (Ninja Gaiden Sigma) and a first party title that isn't even a finished game (cough motorstorm), I'll stick to my DVDs and great games already/soon to be released.

I don't think MS would spend over 1 billion dollars and extend the warranty 3 years if they didn't believe there was a defect in a rather large % of them. I'm not saying the 360 is bad. I just dont see the need for one with my PS3 which I love. Ninja Giaden is far from a "simple port" btw. Motor storm is incredible. Lair, which will be out next month will be amazing. R:FoM is fantastic. And to top it off, the 60GB models are at 499 now :)

(oh, and btw, WE GET MGS4 AND YOU DON'T!)

LOL. <3 E. It is true that MS spent that much money on the extended warranty but I really don't think they care, they have all the money in the world. At least they are doing something about it right?

60GB model down to 499 is a shady business move IMO. They basically screwed over all the early adopters and basically admitted that $599 was way overpriced. But I have some games for you: Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears, 60 FPS Madden compared to 30 FPS madden (lol), Forza, GTA4, Fallout 3, list goes on forever. We don't get MGS4 but meh, I'm more of a Splinter Cell guy.

(We sound like a bunch of flaming fanboys, pretty sad eh?:p)

lol we are flaming fanboys. but i can admin that the 360 isn't bad.

And PS3 gets GT5, GTA4 as well, Lair, Ninja Gaiden, FFXIII, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Haze, UT3, Free online play, etc (this list goes on as well)

And a kick ass Blu-Ray player to boot!oh, and they dropped the price because they're being stupid and bringing in the 80GB models. 60GB was fine with me.

I wonder how much blockbuster got paid by blue ray disk player manufacturers. This makes everybody renting movies in need of a blue ray disk player, bastards. This is going to set me back a few hundred dollars.

Blu-ray was clearly outselling HD-DVD by quite a bit though.

Meh, I'm happy with the results. I <3 my blu-ray movies.
