View Full Version : Suggestion for next SF

I was just wondering (and this is just a thought) if you could possibly have 2 "main" tourney's. Like a CoD and CS tourney. I just figured you had like a bazzillion prizes to hand out, so why not get the best of both worlds, and make everyone happy (which believe me I know is hard;)) You could still have the tourney that gave out money and other stuff, and ALSO have another tourney with some other prizes. I know this might sound alittle giberish cause i'm not feeling so hot right now, but with <sf> coming up around the corner I figured I would give my 2 cents.
Thanks for listening, and if you are totally lost, please say so, so I can clarify some things :D
Peace out guys,
-jeef-fz-
P.S.
This isn't meant to start any flame wars or anything, I'm just giving my input

The way i look at it, it seems like the administrators and originators of stompfest have alot of the hard work done. The stompfest name is somewhat known. The experience on how to pull an event like this off, how to get support, what is needed, who to contact, etc, has all been explored somewhat successfully.
Yet it seems to me that Stompfest is unfocused. There is no real ground to stand on, no backbone, no gimmick.
It seems, as jeef somewhat implies, that alot of the resources that you have secured to run this event go unrealized.
Game servers are very often unutilized, prizes are randomly given out instead of focused on the outcome of a specific event.
It is inherent in human nature that people love to compete. Thats the basis for all video games. Why not embrace that and focus alot of the resources that stompfest has on one or two tournaments.
It would give tons and tons of gamers a reason to take this thing serious. Could possibly bring large sponsors and especially alot more gamers who come to be involved in an event that is well organized, well outlined, and well advertised.
In my opinion, this could be done with just a shift in the focus of this event. The potential upside to this event is enourmous and I would love to see it fully realized. Wheter it is intentional or not, all this event is now is a $30 36 hour file sharing event with occasional, unfocused, and seemingly inconsequential bouts of competition thrown in.

That's perfect bob, that's the way constructive criticisim should be. :P well put. I've considered it, what has stopped this is time. Depending on the game tournaments and rules can drag it upwards of 13 hours. For example CS, average of about an hour or 45 minutes per match, with all around 16 to 25 teams which is our average for a main tournament game with 16, it's a mimumum of 5 hours non-stop. No breaks, no meetings of team captains prior, and the fastest server admins on earth. :P So it averages out to be longer with registration and all the addins, bringing it out to around 9-10 hours on a good day. That's a long stretch, after that most people would like to recoup and take a break before the next major tournament. that's around 10 hours of a 32 hour lan. I hope this sheds some light on the difficulties we face with the tournaments and what is possible. :)

Since lynx posted as i was typing the first one, servers have been maximized along with admins. This has been explored and re-evaluated before every event, and tested at smaller events different methods.

Allrighty, well, uhmmmmmmm. What if you were to limit the teams of CS that were to sign up, say like the first 10-15 team to sign up. Well, i guess that wouldn't really be fair =\. I don't know, I'm going to think about it and i'll get back to ya. Cause I'm all about makin ppl happy :D. I like to see everyone having a good time.
Thankyou for such a quick response :D
P.S. if ya wanna chat my msn is jeefy02@yahoo.com

I dunno about that. Im still kinda looking at this as if it were a situation of past circumstances controling all future events, even though the true resources may not be identical.
If however, the restrictions that are listed could be relieved if the lan opened at say, 5pm on friday, as alot of other lans that ive seen do. Although i get the feeling that Stompfest is almost a niche. Like, that it almost doesnt want to get any more involved with itself than it already is.

We take all day friday to setup in preperation. Usually our venues are what hold us back due to payments of setup days, as compared to full days.
Ill bring it up at our next meeting extending the time, and start days. Thanks lynx.

Please allow me to debunk this sentence, slightly.
A mega ton of prizes are dedicated to the tournaments, and I even gave some prizes out for non-official tournaments and even circumstances where a attendee wanted to run a old-school game tourney.
The random prize throw-outs were prizes under 50.00 and we're mainly prizes that we're meant to be thrown out. With over 30 sponsors for the last event, it became difficult to deal out over 150 prizes between a few tourneys.

I there could be 5-8 matches going on at a time instead of the usual 2-3, then the tournament would be over with quickly.
I do recall that last time the CoD tourney went like lightning.
cod = Easy server manger system and the abitly to run 4 games on one(sweet) machine and have two people decatied to running it. that is what made it go fast.

I'm not the Tournament Lord so please take my comments with a grain of salt. I'd see it becoming an issue running multiple tournaments at the same time. At least to the extent that we're not the CPL or Everlan where a team comes devoted to winning a certain tournament, and thats it. Those guys could care less if UT2004 DM 1v1 is going on during the CS Tournament because they are there for one or the other.
With a non-competitive event like Stompfest, everyone wants a chance at winning in every tournament. If you take that chance from them by running multiple tournaments at one time, then it basically annulls the point of why they came in the first place.
Just my humble thoughts...

you could just set up the bracket and run 2-4 games at once. so if you have 10 teams, running two games at once would help move things along. or i could just be retarded and not reading everything right.

Yeah, doing a single game. I thought the previous comment meant multiple games. As for the single game thing, we did that for CoD last time and it FLEW by.

we had up to 5 matches at a time in progress and everyone who was on deck ready to move into servers non-stop.

yea, Tourney's were smooth last event. We even had a 6th COD server standing by in case of a server crash. GOOD TIMES!! :-D
ut2003 was slower but did have 4 matches going on at a time. (Tournament Got Delayed to a power outage on one end of the building)

Code, all I know is that if UT2k4 doesn't win DM, and knowing that you're a UT guy, you better have a UT2k4 mini tourney :D
Even though I can't see CoD DM being very exciting anyway... ZZZZzzzz.... wake me when that's over.

Yeah, i'll have to reconfig prize alloment if CoD DM 1v1 wins over UT 1v1. Or at the very least hold an unofficial tournament with some hijacked prize stuff.

I am sure if CoD wins the 1v1 tourney, that TeamDFI can work out a deal to sponsor it and allow Code to free up some schwag for another tourney. Its the least we could do for the event which has cradled most of us from our gaming infancy.

we don't need the 1v1 cod dm... you should just have the ut2k4 stuff like ya did at indygamers... that's more fun for the lanparty goers... and we all like to play another game besides cod anyways... plus we were thinking of having our own cod bash thrash competition anyways. so 3 cod events would just be overkill. please consider ut2k4 even if cod wins the dm. all of the people that wanted to play dm should just group up in 5's and play the team tournament :). there are going to be hella tournaments goin on at stompfest... i can't wait.:D
