View Full Version : LAN Parties and Inflation

Some people have talked to me about our LAN being a bit on the expensive side. Code also informed me that people miss the $15, 50 person LAN parties. Unfortunately, as I recall, the bulk of $15 parties only lasted one day (usually saturday all day). When people demanded longer parties, the price went up to cover the insane costs of renting space overnight. I would like to know what people think about going back to having these small one day parties. With the next ID-LAN, we can afford to have to charge $15 a head for a one night party but it would have to be $20-25 if we ran it two days. However, at our new venue we will be allowed to have a concession stand with a variety of different food (don't have to deal with strict hotel catering policies). Let me know your thoughts and we will take them into serious consideration.

I love em both actually, but one day'rs are nice because I get a day to rest. Either way I'm happy.

Only being to one (Stompfest) I wouldn't know about the 1 dayers. Both would be fun either way. As long as I can meet new ppl and play some games i'm happy :D. Cost isn't really a factor, unless it's extremely high. But that is just my 2 cents

Personally I prefer the one day lan. It is tough (especially in the summer) to justify taking a whole weekend off to go play games. With a one day I still have the ability to get other stuff done on the weekend. I like a two day lan, but it doesn't usually fit into my lifestyle.

I don't have allot of time to post my thoughts because I am at work :D.... but there is a totally different atmosphere to gaming at a LAN vs gaming at home. Broadband may be the death of LAN's but I can only hope it won't.
LAN's are a social event. For example, last ID LAN, I was whopping some ass in COD and making sure that I would yell it out too.... That was until another gamer put me in my place. I yelled his name and saying "Is that all you got!" and I heard a laughter in the background.
Fun ain't it? :) There's nothing like it. I've played in clan matches on-line and used teamspeak. It just does not compare to a LAN.
But now here is the major question... can the attendees afford it? There are kids, young adults, and adults alike that in these times may not be able to afford going to LAN's. I've found that after 9/11, StompFest sales were hurt. Let alone with all the other inflation that it costs more to run a LAN than it used to.
I still have a stable job (knock on wood) and can afford to goto LAN's. When I do, I drop a good chuck of money for the weekend. In the case of iG, IndySmash, and etc... I can spend up to $200 between gas, admission, food, and more gas (for those that have seen my truck, you know what I mean).
Well, I've talked to much and have put in to many periods ("..."), so this is something to think about.

I thought that I would put in my two cents. By the way, Brizad you have a nice truck dude. Anyways, I have always wondered why we don't just start the parties on Friday evening like 7:00PM. That way the ones that want to use Sunday as a day of rest can leave late Saturday night and/or the party could end like 7:00AM Sunday morning after breakfast of course. Just a thought. I really enjoyed going out to dinner with the Sponsors a year ago at the fall Stompfest. That was really fun. I'm sure that people that come down friday night would love to be able to game friday night and not have to pay for a hotel. That savings alone would make most not even worry about even a little increase in the price for Friday night. Okay, so I put a dime worth into this, but I just want you to know that Stompfest Rocks and I look forward to it as I have the last 3 years. Take Care and see you in November.

Thanks for the input, I have id-lan set for September 25th, its a saturday, 7am-10pm. thats plenty of time to wake up and get ready for the lan. and enough time to leave and get some sleep so you can do whatever on sunday, Its only a small 50 person LAN, so people dont have to drive from around the state to come, its just a small fun Lan so we can clown on each other again!
again, thanks for the input, wish we could have some more.e
