View Full Version : XP hangs on shutdown

For the past week or so (give or take a day or two), my desktop, which runs XP Pro, has been hanging every time I try to shut it down. It gets as far as the "Saving your settings..." screen, then just sits there until I use the power button to force it to shut off. The computer restarts just fine -- the issue only happens on shutdown.

As far as I can recall, I haven't installed any new drivers or updates. It's been suggested that it might be an issue with the power supply unit, but I don't currently have any way to verify this (no spare psu).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had the same issue.. went to the microsoft support website and downloaded a program that would double check for any programs refusing to shut down when you turn your comp off.

I can't remember the program though, I'll do some looking. That was the solution for me, though.

Hard fix:
1. See if you can shutdown from safe mode
2. Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill as many programs/tasks as possible, see if you can narrow down the culprit.

Easy fix:
1. Wipe XP partition
2. Install Linux, the Superior Operating System™
